My comments on tutoring Literature : Skillful.

I am a very experienced teacher of English as a Second Language (ESL). I served for three years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Afghanistan and the Fiji Islands. I also taught ESL in Japan, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. I have also taught ESL for many years here in the USA to both adults and children. I have experience with many foreign cultures.
I like a conversational, relaxed style in which the students are encouraged to speak English as much as possible. I often have students repeating useful, whole sentences and phrases.Mistakes are okay! Humor is okay! Questions are encouraged.

I tend to be really flexible and try to adapt my teaching style to the learning style of the student. For students who tend to be more tactile, I might have them handle apples if a math problem references apples. If a student is working on a writing assignment, I will offer suggestions (such as marking spelling/grammar/punction mistakes) and help them learn how to correct the errors so they won't continue to make the same errors in the future.

My missionary experiences informed me of one idea: people are important and they have to be considered person-by-person. Those experiences have led me to take a teaching philosophy and teaching practice that is person-centric.
