I use verbal and visual techniques for teaching and prefer to add an element of kinetic learning for tutoring. I explain the material in the book, preferably after the students have read the chapter. I enjoy teaching and working with children of all ages. I feel any person regardless of age can learn. Each learns to their own preferred learning style. First, an analysis of student skills must be taken to ensure foundational skills are sufficient. Next, students need an explanation of new material; I prefer a hands-on approach. This needs to be given in such a way that builds on previous knowledge with minimal confusion. Lastly, I feel students need practice with instant feedback, repetition and continuous review of weak skills. I have taught 6th - 12th grade math as well as college level math courses since 1999. Those courses have range from general math to calculus. I am currently earning a masters of science in education with emphasis in math. I started tutoring part time in 2004 and have continued this throughout college. I worked as a math tutor for tulsa community college part time during the summer. I have earned over 190 hours of college credit, I have two degrees, and I am only 15 hours away from a chemical engineering degree. I am very adaptive to students learning style. I usually spend the first ten minutes of our first meeting figuring out what the student is struggling with and how to best meet their needs. I try to teach students more how to think analytical more so then just solving problems because it is more beneficial to the student. I feel that if I can teach the student how to read theorems, understand concepts, then problems just become easy at that point.
