I have a laid back, yet direct approach to how I teach. I start off with a few questions to find out how the child learns best. This enables me to aid your child in his or her growth based on their own individual needs and interests. I have my degree in Elementary Education. I have had experience teaching large class sizes, but I have also spent a lot of time in small group reading instruction, and I have worked in small group math. I tutored a kindergarten girl to improve her phonemic awareness. I tutored Language Arts in elementary school after school hours. I worked at a day care for 5 years and helped students with their homework after school.
I believe in meeting students at their level of need, and mastering the skills needed in order to move onto higher level skills. I believe in teaching students how to develop their critical thinking skills, and teaching them the concepts needed to succeed in school and life.

A Little Bit About Me...

For the past two years, I have been working as an adjunct instructor and tutor in mathematics and computer information systems for a local Community College. This experience has been so fulfilling, that I am diligently pursuing a career change from Information Technology professional to teaching. I also taught mathematics for one year at a private school.
Students generally perform better with hands-on practice. I provide multiple opportunities for hands-on and guided practice as time permits. Associate new concepts to familiar ones. Our memories are largely associative in nature. Therefore, providing connections from new concepts back to well established ones increases our retention and recall. This is especially important in building up understanding in mathematics. Provide relevant examples. A student who is actively enaged in the lesson will learn more.

My teaching style can vary depending on what age level that I am teaching. According to Erik Erickson, there are eight stages of learning that we develop as children until we become an adult learner. So for the ages (2-7) my teaching style would be a hands- on learning approach. There would be a lot of visual aids and colorful pictures. Since children at this age learn through their senses.
