I am a very energetic and interactive teacher, moving around the classroom, challenging students with questions, providing many examples and anecdotes to illustrate teaching points. I always try to teach inductively--leading the student to discover the answer on their own, and I encourage them to express their own original thoughts. I use a multisensory approach to teaching, using audio-visual resources and the internet whenever possible. I really enjoy leading students to see things from "out of the box" perspectives, to find relationships between seemingly unrelated things, and to synthesize novel insights by doing so. The most important tenet of my teaching style is respect for the individuality and potential of each student.
I taught 3 years in college--Freshman English, Grammar Basics, Composition, Speech, Literature, Business Communications. Taught over 15 years (English, Pr ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working one on one with students because it is allows me to give more in depth and detailed instruction to the student based on his or her learning style. I believe in hands on learning and learning by example. All people have the ability to learn and understand any concept; I work to act as a guide from confused to accomplished.
I have always been interested and active in the education field. I enjoy working individually with students, more so than in a classroom setting. I received a Master's degree in Creative Writing and a Bachelor's in English for Secondary Education, with minors in French and Creative Writing. I have been teaching Composition at a Community College and have tutored students for many years, whether in English, basic French or even math (up to and including Algebra).

A Little Bit About Me...

Although, I have never been in charge of my own class room I consider my teaching style energetic. I love working with students of all ages and find that teaching methods and styles tend to adapt to those individual students. I think it is important to be encouraging and patient with all students. I believe in a hand on approach where students learn from experiences and doing rather than being lectured. As an educator it is my job to get students involved in their own learning and excited about the knowledge that will shape their futures.

A Little Bit About Me...

I really enjoy working with children and adapting to the intricacies of individual learners. I believe that everyone has the potential to find themselves unblemished in the world of an artwork and to develop from this a confidence in who they are and what they are doing that stretches into all aspects of their lives. I believe that art is the spark of passion and I employ this notion of passion as the key to discovery and learning. In this way I approach teaching reading and writing in the same way as I do sculpture; first one must find an individuals own entry point, a child’s own place of interest from which all facets of academia may stem and grow.
While studying at Allegheny College I was pushed by my professors to achieve a high level of academic proficiency as a student, colleague, and later teacher. Very far from a vocational curriculum, Allegheny encouraged its students ... read more
