A Little Bit About Me...

During my Master's program at UCLA, I was exposed to different ways of teaching and believe that students learn in a variety of ways. I am open to trying different approaches and methods with students in order to utilize the most effective means of ensuring that students are learning and retaining new information. I prefer to establish a positive rapport with my students and to create an environment in which they are comfortable and willing to take risks and make mistakes during the learning process. I have always felt that a good teacher can be crucial to students' success both inside the classroom and in the outside community as well.
I recently graduated with my Master's degree in Social Welfare from the University of California at Berkeley, and earned my first graduate degree in 1997 at the University of California at Los Angeles in Education. I taught 2nd grade in a biling ... read more

Education needs to be engaging for learning to happen. It is best when lessons are augmented with games, skits, presentations, art or field trips. Information needs to be presented to students in ways they can absorb it, and I work patiently and enthusiastically with many different types of learners. My college experience was unique to the learning community. Instead of theorizing and contemplating what lives the subjects we studied were living, we lived amongst those most only read about. In addition to traditional bouts of homework and exams I lived in the homes and attended their schools. The philosophy, language and religions they lived became our texts. During which I spent an extended amount of time learning about Japanese culture, their language and their traditions. In Japan I was able to pick up a majority of their spoken and written language, which inevitably assisted me in completing an unprecedented study of the Chinese in Japan. The multiple discipline study allows me to share those subjects with my students.
My strategy to learning unknown subjects is very close to the same way children learn to walk, by immersion. Everything we learned as children was assimilat ... read more

My experience of teaching is not in schools but I have trained many people in the art of rearing shrimp. I am very patient and encourage questions of any kind. I believe that a student needs to feel they can ask any question in order to fully understand. Any student can learn. There are many different personalities and many different ways of learning. When learning is a joy rather than a chore, a student has an even better chance to really understand the subject. My goal is to find the best method for teaching each individual student. Every student deserves an excellent education in order to prepare themselves for a fulfilling life.
After a childhood filled with the joys of reading I graduated from college with a BA in English. While I have continued to enjoy reading and writing, my interest turned to biology, specifically aquaculture where my area of expertise is shrimp breeding a ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked with children since 1991. My concentration during my undergraduate studies was neuroendocrinology. However, after attaining my B.A. in Psychology, I loved working with children so much that I decided to work in the mental health field, serving children and adolescents. During the last 3 years, I have been tutoring students in grades K-5 in language arts and math. For the last year and a half, I have tutored students who were suspected of having special needs. My background in psychology, clinical skills with the special needs population, and knowledge of best practices measures will help your child whether providing stimulating enrichment or bringing your child up to grade level.
My philosophy is that each student should be presented with the best opportunities for learning. I believe that each child is a unique individual with specific needs and learning styles such a ... read more

My teaching style is based on building an empowering relationship between teacher and student. The aim in my teaching is to make the student into an out-going self-learner and to teach the student positive ways of challenging himself. If I were to label myself, I would call myself a patient, understanding teacher. I look for tools and ways to reach my student, often employing numerous aids for a single subject. With the right combination of creativity and patience, I believe I may create a lesson plan suitable to not only teach the student, but inspire the student to take an active role in the learning process.

I believe that once a student can enjoy the process of learning they can begin to internalize the good study habits required for academic success. I use a constructivist teaching method and often use Socratic teaching as a means to have students thinking independently about their work. I am also interested in learning how each student learns so as to get the best results. I believe I'm a natural teacher, enthusiastic, intelligent, and an unusual memory for detail. I enjoy creating interesting contexts for students to learn from, and the intuition to know when a student is making progress. Each student deserves a teacher’s very best, and I intend to know the needs of each student well and prepare myself for maximum efficiency.

After graduate school in the summer of 2003, I taught art at the Pathfinder Ranch in Idyllwild, CA for ten hours a day for three months with a very limited budget. From 2003-2004, I taught on-line students and acted as an academic enrollment counselor for high school students and their parents at Laurel Springs School, a home school in Ojai, CA. In 2005, I lectured and taught a yearlong AP Art History at Thacher, a well known, highly respected boarding school in Ojai, CA. Finally in 2006 I was an AmeriCorps Literacy tutor working with students at Canalino School in Carpinteria, CA, run through the Santa Barbara County Education Office.
