A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated Cum Laude from Ball State with a double major in Visual Communication and Genetics. Both my parents were teachers and I often tutored my friends. I taught Swimming to children every summer for from 2001-2005, so I have experience with young children having a hard time paying attention. I have strong skills in science and math.
I like to work one-on-one with students. I can get a better feel for their learning style and therefore teach for that specific student. I like to teach by relating the subject to real life situations. All students can learn anything, it just sometimes takes a more personal approach before it really clicks. I have had a very successful career as an Engineer/Plant Manager. I changed careers and I am now Teaching/Tutoring. I teach/tutor High School math at an inter-city school (IPS). I also work for a Huntington Learning Center working with high-achieving high school students trying to improve their SAT and ACT math scores.
My teaching style is my tutoring style as I do mostly tutoring. I work with students to determine the missing math procedures or concepts. When a student misses a question, I do not simply show them the solution or correct answer. I solve the problem with the student (without looking at the answer) by discussing the approach (procedure) together. In this way, we share the approach to the solution and weak spots are revealed.

A Little Bit About Me...

I would characterize my teaching style as relationally oriented. I want the student to know that I care about him or her. I may not articulate as much, but I want the student to see that I am giving my time to serve their needs and not my own. Loosely speaking, I am also a proponent of multiple intelligences. The creative teacher can usually identify a way to relate material and content using a methodology that connects. My teaching style is based in facts. I philosophically reject radical post-modernity which posits that truth is a moving target. The student does not have the right to tell me that 1+1 = 3 because 1+1 = 2. A Little Bit About Me...

Hands on, real world examples are the most effective when learning mathematics. It is very important to understand the theory behind what is calculated, in order to understand what is being done. Working lot of examples, from different points of view, and finding easy ways to sanity check your answers is also important.
My ultimate professional goal is to become a statistics teacher at the university level. I am currently working on my MS in Applied Statistics with a SAS certification at Texas A&M, and plan to continue onto a phD. In addition, I graduated suma cum-laude from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 2008 with a BS in Mathematics with a statistics concentration, and minors in Optical Engineering and Economics. While I have no "official" teaching experience, I was frequently required to teach other members of the various teams I was on as well as people from other groups. This involved everything from tutorial presentations to a large and diverse group down to individual tutoring at the table in my office. Most people told me I was pretty good at it.
I first try to determine what level of knowledge my "students" had. Then, building on that, I would add layers until the group I was with understood the material. I would check with them frequently to make sure they understood what we just covered and I allowed questions at any time. If necessary, I would back up and try a different approach. My goal was to make sure they understood the material, whatever it took.
