My love of teaching comes from a lifelong love of learning. After graduating with a 4.0 from Vestavia Hills High School in Birmingham, AL, I went to Auburn University to pursue an Industrial and Systems Engineering degree. After a few years of working as an Engineer with Alabama Power Company, I studied to earn my Masters of Business Administration from the University of Alabama, Birmingham.I believe that having a broad knowledge of all subjects is very important. A few years ago, I decided to leave my corporate job and stay at home to raise my child. I had always loved teaching, so I began to work on my teaching degree online. I am currently in school to go back and teach high school math. I am a bit of a math nerd but LOVE to read, so I enjoy English as well. I specialize in teaching math and English at all levels. My comments on tutoring Microsoft Excel : I am certified in Microsoft Excel 2007.

I attended Brewbaker Technology Magnet high school with a concentration in Information Technology. Then immediately after graduating high school I worked as a Web Developer for Performance Support Inc. for 4 years while in college. I started my own business called Computer Wiz & Associates in 2008, in which I offer computer repair and web development services. While in college, I held the position of Website Content Manager for the University's SGA, and was awarded Executive Staff of the Year for my contributions to the student government association's website. After graduating college with a degree in Computer Information Systems and a minor in International Business, I worked for the Alabama Department of Transportation for 1.5 years as an ASP.NET/C# Web Programmer. I truly enjoy teaching math and enjoy watching the 'click' when a student begins to understand the concepts. I believe many students have been erroneously convinced that "they don't get math" or that math is too hard. I believe in not just working through the problems at hand but in trying to help each student gain a better understanding of the thinking process involved in solving problems. Although proficiency comes through practice, there is more to math than just rote repetition.
I began tutoring students in 1984 while working in the math lab as an undergraduate student at the University of Southern Mississippi. After completing my Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics with a general science minor, I had the opportunity to teach college algebra as a graduate teaching assistant. I have been tutoring/teaching mathematics and some sciences ever since. I have experience tu ... read more

My goal when teaching a student is to explain the subject in the most simplest way possible. So next time the student is back in the classroom, they will have some understanding of what the teacher is teaching. I also like to get an understanding of the way the student learns. This helps me when deciding on teaching techniques.
I have over 10 years in tutoring elementary and high school students. I started tutoring in 2000 with the YMCA's after-school program. I stayed there for six years before taking a break to finish college. In summer 2009, I started tutoring with the Boys & Girls Club in Montevallo. I love to see the light-bulb go on inside as children grasp material they are struggling with. At first, I teach and watch to see their facial expressions and comprehension in order to figure out what they are struggling with. Then, I approach the topic from a different way, tailored to their specific struggles. I continue to reassess their comprehension and approach the topic from different angles until I break through. Take algebra, for example. Often times, students struggle with having to "show their work." The long process required to get to the answer becomes confusing. I find that a simpler, shorter process is comprehended well. So, I start with this. I make sure that they have mastered the shorter, simpler technique and then, I broaden their understanding so they are able to master the longer process required by their teachers.
I have a BA and MS degree in Psychology, which ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

During high school, my teacher requested that I help others in my class and I realized how much I loved helping others understand how accounting works. Also in helping my children with their school work, I have learned that each child is different and learns in different ways. I would describe my style of teaching as finding out how a particular student learns best and work form that foundation. Some learn better by seeing an example and then working it out on their own with someone to consult if they get stuck. Other learn better with what they hear and others what they read. It is better to see how each person learns best and teach from that angle. Also, patience is the greatest teaching aid available to any teacher or student.
I earned both of my degrees while working and caring for very young children. I feel this was possible because of my time management skills and dete ... read more

More About This Tutor...

After High School, I taught Sunday School at the small church I attended. I was co-teacher with an older gentleman, and the students were 12-15 years old. When my wife and I lived in Seymour (2002-2004), we often helped our nephews with their math homework or class Science projects. I loved explaining the basics, the steps required as we conducted the experiments and documented results in a logical, orderly progression of events. Our oldest nephew struggled with Algebra and geometric reasoning. When in Seymour, I could teach him one-on-one, and especially enjoyed using sketches to drive home geometrical concepts.
1) I like to help the student define our goal: "What is it we are trying to achieve?" 2) "How do we get there?" Here I am open to suggestions from the student as to how we achieve that goal. This gives me clues to his/her learning style. 3) I try to help the student ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I worked in accounting for one year as accounts receivable manager for one of the fastest growing companies in Mississippi. I also performed all accounting tasks for my own business for 3 years. I then went back to school in 2008 and finished my accounting degree at Delta State University in Cleveland Mississippi. I have tutored students in accounting and computer courses for the last year and even though I have moved to Birmingham I am still contacted by students in Mississippi through word of mouth.
I break down subjects to the most basic level and build from there. This is the way all of my football coaches did things each year, they taught football stance at the beginning of August no matter the player's experience. Some students find this condescending but it usually progresses fast enough to reach their skill level without offending. I have always found that starting at the ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working, teaching, and mentoring children. I have learned to adjust to the different learning styles of children, which makes it easier for the child to feel more comfortable with learning. In order to work with children there has to be a great amount of patience and concern. I have learned patience through working with children from all walks of life and I have come to appreciate each child's story. I belive that reaching out to those in need will not only help someone else to meet their full potential but for the teacher also. I believe in making a difference in other's life because others have helped shaped me into who I am today.
As a recent graduate, I have learned the importance of education. I have earned a Bachelor of Science with a major in Biology and minor in Chemistry. Not only do I contain a strong understanding in those subjects but took several classes in oth ... read more
