Composition is one of my top subjects!

I have taught (intermittently) college level English for 20 years. I have also taught ESL in public schools for 8 years. I now tutor on my own time any age level and anything related to English---including helping people finish memoirs or other books/novels. I am also a writer, working on a novel and screenplays/stageplays. I also write for local publications.
Teaching with compassion for the learner is my style of teaching. Making students understand their abilities and not dwell on any weaknesses are important for learning. I take ESL students at their level and help them make progress that is relevant to their lives.

I try to find out the learning style of the person I am teaching and use that as my primary teaching style. Some people learn better by hearing, some by reading or seeing and some by doing. I think focusing on the style that the person prefers to learn and then backing it up with the other styles to reinforce what they have learned is the best way for the student to retain the information. During high school, my teacher requested that I help others in my class and I realized how much I loved helping others understand how accounting works. Also in helping my children with their school work, I have learned that each child is different and learns in different ways. I would describe my style of teaching as finding out how a particular student learns best and work form that foundation. I believe that learning needs to be fun, but that students need, and most of the time want, structure in their classrooms. I believe that learning needs to be relevant to students. They need to know why and where in their lives they will need or be using what they are being taught. I use a variety of instuctional methods while teaching (lecture, discussions,group activities, etc.) so students stay interested and because every student learns differently.
