I am a retired Boulder valley teacher and I have taught from the preschool to college level for over 20 years. Most recently, I worked as an ESL and reading teacher. My training was modeled after reading recovery and involved one year of supervised teaching one-on-one with children who were struggling readers. The goal of this training is to help children work with their strengths as readers, rather than focusing on their weaknesses. Children learn the strategies that they need in order to be successful, independent readers. The work I do with them is very focused and begins with a thorough diagnostic assessment of their reading abilities. I believe teaching should be child friendly and as interactive as possible. When learning is fun, even difficult concepts become easy. My goal is to motivate children to succeed and teach them that they can do anything if they put forth their best effort. I strive to create an environment where students can focus feel safe to take risks. With positive reinforcement I hope to encourage and motivate students as well as instill confidence in them.
While I was attending college I worked in child care with a variety of ages preparing lessons for enrichment. I also taught as an adjunct professor for adult ESL at Aims Community College.
