Individualized learning/teaching for optimal comprehension

I started tutoring in my teens helping young children with Autism Spectrum Disorders develop English and Math skills as well as speech therapy and public speaking. I tutored my fellow students while attending Carroll Community College in English 101 and 102 as well as Creative Writing. I then moved on to being a one on one with high school students with special needs in the Baltimore area.
I take a hands on material approach to learning/teaching. I feel that young students learn best when they can physically learn, such as through blocks/puzzles/interactive learning devices and other similar approaches. I try to let the student use their hands as much as I can to aid in their learning process. For older students such as my high school students or their college counterparts I use more direct audial teaching and visual teaching styles. Every person learns differently, so I cater my t ... read more

Logic is one of my top subjects!

I have three years of experience tutoring mathematics as a tutor for the Academic Achievement Center at Towson University. During this time many students have expressed their gratitude towards me and thanked me for helping them understand what can be a cryptic subject at times. With each student that I tutor I try to instill not only a comprehension of mathematics but also an appreciation for it.

More About This Tutor...

I have tutored math, chemistry and physics both officially and unofficially throughout most of my undergraduate education. My BS in physics, as well as my work in an atmospheric physics lab, has given me a strong mathematical and physical science background. I have tutored, and taught some classes in summers and winter breaks both while at UMBC, and at Towson, where I currently attend graduate school for education.
I belief that conceptual understanding is the foundation of learning. Teaching kids to solve a specific problem that they can't do doesn't accomplish much, in my opinion. Going back to the concept and helping them really understand what is going on, either physically or mathematically, will not only help them with the problem they have, but give them a basis for future knowledge.

My teaching style emphasizes the differences between children, especially with regards to learning styles. Different children comprehend and understand in unique ways - while one may understand best from tactile or visual demonstrations, others learn best simply by hearing. Even within the same student, certain concepts are best understood in atypical ways. I firmly believe that as an educator, my job is to be flexible and creative in devising appropriate teaching methods for each child - what works for one will not always work for another. The most effective teaching comes from understanding this, and tailoring specific approaches to each individual student's needs.
I currently have two degrees: a B.S. in Environmental Science and a B.A. in Global Studies. In pursuing these degrees I have gained knowledge in various fields including biology, math, chemistry, global politics a ... read more

I have tutored children ranging in ages from 7 years old to 22 years old, so I have learned that not all learn in the same manner. I believe I am versatile in my teaching methods so as to fit the needs of any student, and if need be, I'll use additional methods that may be useful. I believe all students have the capacity to learn, but it is the job of the teacher to ensure that he/she is learning the best way possible.

I get a profound sense of fulfillment helping students achieve success and I believe that my commitment to helping students revivify their desire to learn, realize their intellectual potential and develop the skills necessary to find success in and beyond the classroom is unmatched. Being fresh out of college, not only can I identify with students on many levels but I can attest to the frustrations of being under the tutelage of an instructor who isn't fully committed to providing the high quality of instruction that one should expect. I believe the key to teaching is to understand your student’s needs, to be able to empathize with their struggles and have the ability to tailor your approach to teaching to accommodate the student.

A Little Bit About Me...

My aspiration in life has been to see young students achieve success in their careers by learning and understanding the concepts of the courses they take. My motivation is having the students achieve this tremendous transformation. For over sixteen years, I have been involved in making education for our children more exciting by using a unique but efficient technique which has brought lots of positive results. This technique involves being more responsive to the students real learning difficulties by navigating such areas even if they are not immediately associated with the topic in context but are a must for a clear and precise understanding of the topic.

In my 16 years as an educator, I taught middle school and high school mathematics and I worked for 5 years providing staff development for elementary math teachers (Pre-K to grade 5) helping them to improve instruction and become effective teachers of mathematics. In addition to being a teacher, I also worked as tutor, providing mathematics instruction for students of all ages. Finally, I was also a tutor at the college level when I worked as a mathematics adjunct.
My desire to help people learn motivates me to search for strategies so that students can learn even the most difficult mathematics concept. Students I have worked with as well as adults say that I am an extremely patient and caring teacher and that I always find ways to help them understand. Not only do I teach students the concepts, I also utilize various strategies in order to help them retain the information so that ... read more
