My comments on tutoring Drama : Coach Voice, Movement/Blocking, and overall Performance; Critique Performance and Writing (Stage and Screen Plays)

I am a professional technical writer, published author (www.TheOtherWorlds.net), and produced playwright, with a passion for writing and drama. I have several decades of experience as a writer, professionally and at an amateur level. The primary focus of my career has been in providing solid dependable technical writing and documentation for a number of industries, including: robotics, electronics, video, film, special effects, and government (DoD). Creatively, I write long and shot fiction, have published a novel and had a play produced by the American Southwest Theatre Company. My experience in drama also goes back for several decades. I have directed and performed in dozens of plays, mostly at the community and college level, but some at the semi-professional level. I also have years of experience in the motion picture industry in Hollywood (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm037848 ... read more

I prefer to relate things to the real world. For instance, when teaching anything dealing with Greek Mythology, I like to pick out something from the myth that is relevant to today (like from "The Iliad," the character Ajax is known as being stronger than Greece, and the soap brand Ajax has the slogan of being "stronger than grease").
I have loved English since I was in middle school. I went to college with the desire to graduate with a degree in English Education, but realized (after almost three years in this program) that the education program at my school was completely disorganized. I decided to drop education and pursue a degree in solely English with a special interest in literature. I have also starred in two plays that my church put on- one that required only actions and another that had a multitude of lines and musical sections. As for Sign Language, I have an aunt w ... read more

My comments on tutoring Drama : I was very involved with theater in high school and learned a lot about acting and auditioning.

I like to see examples of what the person is having difficulty with in order to pinpoint problems and then work on them from there.
I am currently an English major, specifying in creative writing, at Virginia Tech. In high school, I took both of the offered AP English courses and passed with a 4 on both. In college, almost every class I have taken has been English-oriented, with regards to either literature or writing. When it comes to helping others, I have been editing friends' papers some in high school and multiple times weekly in college. I am able to find what they are doing wrong and constructively advise ways to fix their problems with writing.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have earned my BA in Religion from The College of William and Mary. I have tutored every year since 2004 in situations ranging from private tutoring of special needs students, tutoring under-privileged kids and gifted kids. I have experience with children with ADD/ADHD and learning disabilities and prefer special needs students, however any student who needs to or is willing to learn will be my joy to instruct. My strongest areas of expertise are: Church history, early and modern Christianity and Judaism; writing, due to numerous papers I had to compose during my time at William and Mary (I am currently in the process of publishing one); reading comprehension; and math/science in younger age children.
I prefer special needs students because I enjoy finding what works for a learner and working around their preferences - and special needs children will often tell you, directly or n ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching 3rd grade Sunday School for two years. I have been assisting my children in an educational capacity for over 7 years. I have experience in a preschool setting, volunteering with children ages 3-13, and also as a tutor to dyslexic and ADD/ADHD children. I am also a writer currently engaged in finishing my first novel.
I believe in teaching with love, enthusiasm, compassion, understanding, excitement, and discipline. You must keep an open mind, open heart, and open arms to be truly successful. I employ a variety of educational styles in an attempt to engage all types of learners, with a heavy emphacis on hands-on activites. I am not afraid to try new whings, nor am I afraid to try again if something doesn't work out as well as planned. I try also to treat each student as an individual while still adhering to basic group rules of conduct and respect.

I believe all children can meet their potential if they are given the appropriate surroundings and learning experiences. I believe in fully engaging children in learning by making it interactive and fun. I am kind and patient, and I love to make children laugh, especially while learning. My philosophy of education is to help students enjoy learning while making a positive impact on their lives, a feat which I believe all teachers should strive towards.
As a graduate of a small college, I firmly believe in individualized and personalized education. My greatest strengths lie with my degree, a BA in Early Childhood Education. I have much experience with teaching reading and phonics at an elementary level, even with non-native English speakers. I also am well-versed in teaching elementary math and science.

I have been successful throughout my career with excellent test scores for my students. Throughout my teaching experience, I have learned and perfected many different ways to teach concepts to students according to their ability level. I love working with children of all ages. I can say I am patient enough to deal with elementary students being that I've done so before. I love to have fun with learning and can bring the fun of learning to the classroom. I want the students to want to learn and that is what I am going to bring to the table.
Children's church is where a year of my experience comes from. I would guide a group of children during the service and would spend individual time with those who wanted to brush up on their reading and writing. I enjoyed every minute of this experience and can say I made an impact in those children's lives.

A Little Bit About Me...

Having been the top student in my senior class at Norfolk State University, I often assisted my classmates who had difficulties in writing papers. During my time as an undergraduate, I served as a long-term substitute teacher in the Portsmouth Public School system. I recieved my BA in English and graduated with a 3.97 grade point average. This fall, I will begin the Master's of Teaching program at Empire State College in New York.
Whether teaching my son to read, guiding elementary school students through a discussion of the water cycle, or assisting a classmate with a term paper, I always try to employ the Socratic method. I believe that one teaches by asking questions rather than by providing answers. Things learned by rote are easily forgotten. By asking questions, the instructor fully involves the students in the learning process. There is nothing so satisfying to me as seeing ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a creative teacher, meaning that I assess the individual and do not have an agenda that I adhere to. Normally, I am able to advance a child a grade level in reading with three months of tutoring and reinforcing homework, during the summer. However, I will go the extra mile to help a student be able to totally understand what I am trying to help them learn. I have numerous children's educational CD-ROMs for the children who learn better with that visual help. I love to watch children learn and love to be the one who makes them able to succeed. I have a number of visual and written tools and will find out what works with the student and find a way to make that available.
I have been a volunteer for various literacy programs for the past several years, focusing primarily on phonics rather than sight reading. I have worked in two group homes for dually diagnosed adults, meaning ... read more

I believe in using multiple teaching strategies that encompass all the different learning curves. I believe in using many examples such as hands on activities, listening skill development, study skills techniques, think pair share, jig saw method, and the scientific approach. I also highly believe in positive reinforcement. Praising and encouraging a child for job well done, and supporting and scaffolding a child who needs encouragement, giving a child small successes can lead to bigger successes which will make a difference in a students academic life.
