I graduated May 2013 from Fredonia with a Bachelors degree in Childhood Education. My concentration is in English. I spent a year of professional development in the Hamburg school district where I had student teaching placements in first, second, and fifth grade. I have spent the last year learning the Common Core standards and aligning curriculum to them. I've worked as a substitute teacher for the last 3 years and have 2 children of my own. As an Honor roll student, a student on the Dean's list I was lucky to have graduated early. I taught six graders through opelia. I have also tutored a master's Student through her Statistics. Currently tutoring a student via online on her Senior Algebra for her Liberal Arts degree. I will hold a BA degree come december of 2010. My philosophy is that education is power. Knowledge is our greatest defense and our greatest weapon. Through knowledge we gain experience, which enriches our competence, which protests the ills of society, which leads to a social justice, and most important, liberty. Learning is an activity that we should never stop, and if we do, we begin to die. I believe all children can learn given the appropriate avenues to success. Part of our job is to find those avenues and encourage our students to use them.
I have been substitute teaching for 5 years. Within that time I decided that teaching was for me and went on to get my degree and certificate to teach. The single most important thing about being a teacher or mentor is to be respectful, socially aware, and sensitive. Okay, that's three things, but they kind of go together. The second most important thing about being a mentor is to create understanding about the underlying principle of whatever it is he or she is learning about. Once you understand the underlying principle, the "how to" stuff becomes a *lot* easier to understand and remember. On the other hand, a person who's trying to learn the "how to" stuff without understanding the underlying principles is likely to forget key things, to be tripped up when an unexpected question arises, and to get into other trouble.

I enjoy working with and teaching all levels of students and children. No two children learn in the same way. It is important to differentiate and identify the way that each child needs to be taught and engaged in the lesson. Lessons must be concrete and meaningful to a child. When working towards my Bachelor's I was able to achieve a dual BS in Accounting and Business Management. After working a few years, I decided to go into teaching. I currently teach college composition and literature interpretation. I also tutor English composition at a community college. I homeschooled my own children, and I recently recieved my NYS certification to teach English Language Arts at the secondary level. I have a BA in psychology and classics and an MA in psychology.
I love composition and literature, and I am especially drawn to students at the developmental level.
