I have a few years experience teaching in the Air Force. I also have an extensive background in engineering, statistics and math in general. While in the Air Force I was an instructor for the Space Operations School in Colorado Springs. This gave me the opportunity to go through many classes on how to instruct various types of students. Even though I taught adults, I am also very comfortable teaching children. I also have been an engineer most of my career so I have experience with real world math problems. I have never tutored as a job but did take and pass all the testing required to become a high school and middle school math teacher in Texas (TExES). I enjoy teaching when there is a bit of a challenge getting the student to understand the concept. As I have mentioned, I can use different styles to help the student get the concept. I have a great deal of patience and believe that everyone can learn. I enjoy the way someone looks after they have understood and mastered an idea. I tutored all subjects - especially in Math all through High School. I also tutored in college. I have strong skills in Math - all levels - but I especially enjoy algebra. I have two children and I basically taught my oldest son math, since he was a different kind of learner than the way they teach at school. He is a very kinesthetic type learner and needs to see, feel and touch to understand the concepts - so I used a lot of tools to help him. I have two teenage sons, both of whom I have tutored through pre-AP Algebra, the oldest is in pre-Calculus this year. I tend to take a holistic approach, showing "why" the student needs to know the material, and "where" it fits in with other disciplines, instead of just "how" to do it. When I was in high school, I decided upon attending Oklahoma State University, based upon the fact that OSU sponsored a high school scholastic competition, whereas OU was only known for football. Since my graduation from Southeaster Oklahoma State University I substituted on all grade levels from pre-k to 12th grade for 2 years. I long-term substituted first grade from January to May of 2008 and 5th grade from April to May of 2007. I also taught 5th grade Science for the school year of 2008-2009. Substituting has enabled me to see the different learning styles and behaviors of many different types of children.
