Effective teaching requires clear instructing. I attempt to break each assignment down to its simplest level. Ideas must be transformed into practical, relevant information that enable students to make difficult concepts easy to understand and comprehend. It is the only way to appreciate the rote and, in the end, capture the essence of the subject matter. Simplicity has been a key to my success as a teacher.
Having grown up with a family of educators, there was never any doubt I would become a teacher. I hold a MS degree in Educational Administration and a BS degree in English and have taught 26 years of high school, primarily seniors. I've worked with children, adolescents, and adult learners. I've worked in one-on-one settings in a writing center lab and have lectured to a classroom on a college campus and in an on-line setting. I, having taken several teaching practicums and pedagogy classes, work to constantly improve and revise my teaching methods. I try to create a balance between learner-centered theory and teacher-centered. Due to my degree and work experience I have ample experience and expertise in grammar, writing process and writing technique. Following my education I served two years with AmeriCorps: The first year with the Minnesota ReadingCorps wherein I worked with under-achieving first graders and the second year with the National Civilian Community Corps wherein I traveled the American Southwest doing various service projects.
