My preferred method of teaching is hands-on, through real experiments. Unfortunately, experiments cannot always be done, so I use lots of illustrations and age-appropriate analogies that are easy to relate to. Many times students are convinced that science is a subject too difficult to conquer, that they must just survive it, but science is all around us. I strive for that "a-ha" moment when a student realizes that all biological and physiological processes are interrelated and that the trick to understanding science is to build on previously learned concepts. I believe that teaching solid fundamentals and relating more difficult topics to already learned information is key to helping students thoroughly understand the subject. I think it takes a lot for one teacher to reach all of types of students who are all at different levels of interest in the subject being taught as well as at different levels of understanding. However, I feel it is the teacher's responsibility to give them all equal opportunity to learn. It is not just about grades and assignments, that is just the means to an end, but it is about learning. In order for the students to learn, the teacher needs to be passionate about the students as well as the subject that is being taught. That will instill in the students a desire to learn and understand.
