Trumpet is one of my top subjects! I have 17 years of playing experience, covering every genre of trumpet playing, including classical, jazz, latin, and marching band/drum corps. I know how to build a player to his/her physical (high playing) and technical (fast playing) potential. I served as Principal Trumpet for the Shoals Symphony in Florence, AL for 3 years before moving to Tampa, where I am currently a substitute player for the Florida Orchestra.

I believe in teaching the right way to do something the first time. Bad playing habits are much easier to avoid than to correct. I prefer for the student to have a short (20 to 30 minute) daily practice session that is highly concentrated, than to practice for two hours twice a week. I also like to keep a very relaxed atmosphere... because you simply play better when you are relaxed. I can teach someone to play higher or faster, but my main goal is to make sure that someone has a firm grasp of the basics, such as posture, breath support, embouchure, articulation, and tone quality.

I love using manipulatives with all subjects. It makes learning fun even for those that are frustrated with the subject. Since everyone learns in a different way I need to teach the material in different ways to find out which way is best for that student. By using manipulatives with verbal directions and giving examples for them to see covers the bases of physical, visual, and aural learning students. I was not very good in certian subjects like math in elementary school and I had to come up with ways to learn the material on my own. This has helped me to teach students that are like me when I was that age. I can relate to how they are struggling and their frustration in not keeping up with the rest of the class.

I beleve teaching depends on individuals capacity of the student some are past learner and some are slow. You should find a way to make the student understand what to to do step by step or according his capability to digest the lesson.
