A Little Bit About Me...

As an Associate Research Professor at Duke University I conducted research on the health of the elderly population and the genetic background to age-related diseases. I am well published, always serving as my own statistician. The background to most common disorders in adults is complex involving multiple genes, thus I used advanced fuzzy latent class analysis to identify high and low risk sets of gene variants and to define the level of risk for individuals. I have collaborated with graduate students and taught genetcs to medical students. As a co-founder and the scientific director of Matrix Genomics, Inc. I relate genetic concepts to others on a daily basis.
I am flexible in my teaching style because of my experience with professionals and the general public, and because of the diverse topics that I have studied. I like to make a difference when someone wants to learn.

History is my major, and having spent much of my youth on the European continent with my father's duty assignments, it is easy to teach the events that have led to the present situations. I do this through modeling what I expect them to learn, provide time for guided practice, reteach and model more if necessary, then provide opportunities for independent practice, while giving specifc feed back.
