Reasonable Rates for a Passionate, Experienced Teacher

I have been teaching Information Technology at both the elementary and middle-school level in private schools in Northern Virginia for most of the last ten years. In addition, I have tutored at high-school level in Chemistry and History. With both a Bachelor's Degree in History, and a Maser's degree in Network Information Systems, I am qualified to tutor in both the Social as well as the Computer Sciences, with an additional capability in Chemistry and Math at the advanced high school level.
I think that the most important aspect of tutoring is finding out why the student needs a tutor, and to get to the bottom of that, it is important to listen to the student and figure out what the barrier to learning has been. I know that each student has an incredible amount of potential and the trick to unlocking it is not in forcing a set way of understanding ideas, but in approaching each problem from several different fronts and working towards a total understanding of one concept before moving on to the next. Secondly, laughter and enjoyment need to be part of the learning process. A Little Bit About Me...

I really enjoy being around kids and helping them learn new things. When you teach a kid something and they finally get it, the sight of their face lighting up is priceless. I believe that one should teach using a variety of methods because all kids do not learn the same way and each individual method shows something new each time. I believe that all kids can learn so much if they work as hard as they can and put forth maximum effort. I think it is very easy to learn/teach using as many hands on examples as possible.

I am a recent honors graduate of the Virginia Military Institute with a degree in civil and environmental engineering. This course of academic study exposed me to a broad range of upper-level mathematics, physics, and chemistry. During my college career I volunteered with a mentoring program known as Big Brother/ Big Sister to tutor elementary school students, and I also privately tutored fellow college students in Calculus I.

I taught 7th grade Language Arts for six years when I lived in Florida. I collaborated on the team that created the Orange County curriculum for teaching writing to the middle grades. This curriculum is still in use today. I worked for the Princeton Review as a tutor doing SAT preparation both privately and in a classroom setting. This was in preparation for both the verbal and math skills sections.
I believe that students of all ages respond to humor, honesty, and respect. Subjects in which that students have difficulty can be made accessible to them by demonstrating to them the humor in learning something hard and the fun of conquering the subject. My experiences have spanned all ages and types of children's learning abilities. From a church setting, to a public school to a driver training car. As a substitute teacher, I worked on developing a good rapport with the students. And was always willing to assist them in working towards understanding the concepts before them.
