Reasonable Rates for a Passionate, Experienced Teacher

I think that the most important aspect of tutoring is finding out why the student needs a tutor, and to get to the bottom of that, it is important to listen to the student and figure out what the barrier to learning has been. Once that is solved, whether it be a lack of interest in the subject, or simply a lack of aptitude for that subject (not all of us are math wizards, for example), I devise an approach that fits the individual student's learning profile and interest area. Teaching styles have to differ from student to student in order to meet that person's needs; this is what I do to maximize the learning experience.

I know that each student has an incredible amount of potential and the trick to unlocking it is not in forcing a set way of understanding ideas, but in approaching each problem from several different fronts and working towards a total understanding of one concept before moving on to the next. Secondly, laughter and enjoyment need to be part of the learning process. I believe that students of all ages respond to humor, honesty, and respect. Subjects in which that students have difficulty can be made accessible to them by demonstrating to them the humor in learning something hard and the fun of conquering the subject. Learing should be something students enjoy.
I taught 7th grade Language Arts for six years when I lived in Florida. I collaborated on the team that created the Orange County curriculum for teaching writing to the middle grades. This curriculum is still in use today. I worked for the Princeton Review as a tutor doing SAT preparation both privately and in a classroom setting. This was in preparation for both the verbal and math skills sections.

I really enjoy being around kids and helping them learn new things. When you teach a kid something and they finally get it, the sight of their face lighting up is priceless. I believe that one should teach using a variety of methods because all kids do not learn the same way and each individual method shows something new each time. I believe that all kids can learn so much if they work as hard as they can and put forth maximum effort. I think it is very easy to learn/teach using as many hands on examples as possible.
