I am an experienced dyslexia tutor. I have been tutoring children and adults for the past 10 years using the Barton Reading and Spelling System. The Barton Reading and Spelling System is an one-on-one intensive tutoring system! I received my training at The Dyslexia Tutoring Center in Hawaii where I volunteered. I have been a private Orton Gillingham tutor in both Hawaii and now in Virginia both in-person and online. I have taught English and Grammar, and am in the final stages of my Ph.D. in history. My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : I have had stellar success working with students with decoding disorders, though I do not follow a prescribed curriculum such as OG.

I love to incorporate art and sensory experiences into everything I do to really activate the brain. The "Drill and Kill" is very rarely appropriate, so I tailor every approach individually. What works for one student may not work with another. My formal training includes many intervention types and experience with multiple programs and curricula, so I have a large pool from which to draw...then we get creative! My style REALLY aims for those over-arching foundational skills like critical thinking, thought organization, and problem solving. I will also track and provide data to monitor progress and hold myself accountable for effectiveness.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe each person is unique and different. Therefore, my teaching style is individualized depending on the student and their needs. I do however believe in a hands-on, interactive approaches in order to keep students engaged and interested in learning.
I am a 2014 graduate of Marymount University where I received a Masters in Special Education. I have teaching experience at both the elementary and middle school levels. In middle school, I focused on teaching 7th grade Math, but am comfortable in Language Arts as well. Along with teaching, I have been a nanny for many years and therefore have experience with kids beyond the classroom.

More About This Tutor...

When I first attended college I studied elementary education. I put my education on hold to stay at home and raise my children. During that time I was a compulsive volunteer with different support groups within the school system. I decided to complete my education as my children got older and received my bachelors degree and continued to take classes so that I am now able to sit for my CPA and I have also completed the necessary undergraduate requirement in order to teach business classes. I have also been a long term substitute teach in working with special education students.
Every child can learn and children learn at different levels. A teaching style must change to meet the needs of the child because what may work for one child may not work for another.
