I've enjoyed working with children, a native American, and adults. Some can learn more than what is required and I have raised the bar. To prepare myself, I would review as necessary. I pay close attention to what is going on in the mind of the student and on student's paper, working on my paper in parallel, and making student corrections promptly. I like to give motivation and discuss, give insights and examples from my experience, and suggest better ways to solve a problem. I believe learning is an organic process involving physical changes to the brain. This requires work: memorizing definitions and formulas, understanding the use and meaning of formulas, practicing on paper and verbalization, and periodic practise for retention.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that children are born smart. Some of them have special learning challenges and some have been taught to believe that they are not smart. By treating children as though they are intelligent and providing encouragement and learning opportunities, I have seen children grow and progress in almost astonishing ways. The sparkle in a child's eyes when they finally "get it" is the best paycheck.
After finishing my Masters Degree in Education I taught one year in a private school then opened my own business tutoring primarily homeschool students during the school year. The students I have worked with are primarily ages 11-18, but my experience with my own children includes the primary grades. I have tutored most subjects including reading, writing, science, history and math (through algebra).

During my undergraduate education at the University of Utah I worked for Upward Bound and for Student Services as a tutor for both High School and College Students. During those three years I tutored all levels of Math as well as Physics, Chemistry and Engineering. I also taught ACT preparation courses. Since then I have tutored students on occasion from elementary age through undergraduate levels in both formal and informal settings. The reason I continue to tutor is the great enjoyment I get from helping someone achieve understanding that they were unable to obtain from their classroom or individual studies.
