Each of us has a different way of learning but the first step is to appeal to a student's natural inquisitiveness. If they can see real life applications for the skills they are learning they will become engaged and enthusiastic. I have and continue to use many of the skills I learnt in school and they have been instrumental in assisting me to find solutions to complex problems. These are stories to share with students so they can see the usefulness of the skills they are learning . Though I focused more on teaching social skills, I learned first hand that each child has a different way of learning and that not just one style is effective, especially for any special needs child. After graduating, I worked in two different school systems as a remedial teacher. I even designed a new remedial reading and spelling program for the one school. From 1991-1998, I worked at a Christian elementary school, where I was a librarian, bookkeeper, and substitute teacher.
