A Little Bit About Me...

I have a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a master’s degree in environmental engineering. I have three and a half years of experience teaching chemistry courses and three years of professional experience in the private industry. I am patience with the students and I encourage them to ask me questions. My philosophy is that each student has a unique way of learning and I help them to find their best way to study.
I love the one on one interaction a tutor has with the students. I believe all children have a unique style of learning and we need to help them find their own way of learning. For example some kids are visual learners, while others are hearing learners. My work as a tutor is to see which method is the best for them. I am very patience with my students. Some students just need a little bit of guidance to help raise their self esteem and I am sure with our help they are go ... read more

The greatest challenge in effectively teaching students is also what makes being an educator most rewarding. That challenge is about making connections with what students already know. My teaching style focuses on having an understanding of the student's pre-existing knowledge, and using that as a base on which to create connections to new knowledge. In this way, new ideas that were once abstract can be made relevant to the student's life, creating a real learning situation. This challenge is also the most rewarding part of being an educator because when students learn by building connections, they get excited about that new information. In addition to creating a lesson based on the students' pre-existing knowledge, I believe that the most effective way to teach should include a combination of methods of instruction. More than simply reading text and writing responses to questions, ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that the teacher's most important job is to present material in a way that makes learning fun and interesting. Everyone learns best in different ways, and it is important to remember this when tutoring or teaching. Whereas some learn best with visualizations, others learn by listening. I love finding new and creative ways to present a lesson or concept. I have a passion for teaching and hope to be an educator for the rest of my life.
I have always loved teaching and working with kids. I have volunteered at a number of places that allowed me to exercise my ability to tutor and mentor children ages 5-17. Since high school, I have volunteered at a local preschool. This past summer, I spent time in Honduras teaching English at an orphanage. I have a very concrete understanding of English and Spanish grammar, and I have spent the last four years studying writing at Grand Valle ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout my academic career, I have excelled in many subject areas. As a result of my academic success I graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Grand Valley State University in Natural Resource Management. Currently I am pursuing a master of science degree in biology at GVSU. As a grad assistant I assisted in the instruction of ornithology labs. I have strong skills in biology, statistics and analytical writing.
I believe everyone has the tools to succeed. The ability to recognize strengths and weaknesses, and to adjust accordingly, is what it takes to succeed. Everyone is an individual, and as such, everyone has unique learning techniques. I believe encouraging the natural curiosity the student is the best way to foster a learning environment. By encouraging curiosity an instructor can turn learning from a chore to do, into a lifelong activity enjoyed by the stu ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I recalled my difficulties in learning difficult subjects, my difficulties are not universal but I draw from them in finding what is blocking the student from grasping certain concepts. I recall teaching my children at a very early age the concept of ratios. I used windows, tiles from the kitchen, a pizza pie etc. This, before going to pencil and paper and it worked. Till this day they know fractions inside and out because they understood the concept in real life. This is typically my approach, then we can go and do problems in the abstract on paper.
I have a very broad experience in the fields of chemistry and physics. This was attained during my work experience within the Pharmaceutical industry. This has enabled me to gain an intimate knowledge of research methodology, logical approach to problem solving, mathematical relationships, and writing skills as evident in publications ... read more

Ever since graduating from college and moving to Chicago I make time during my week to volunteer at the Chicago Temple in the Loop to help a child develop reading and comprehension skills in the English language. I invent creative ways and use the scientific method to engage my tutee with learning, such as on one occasion, while reading a literary work by Cuban poet Jose Marti, both the student and I individually drew pictures and diagrams as a way of interpreting the poem, and later shared our ideas with each other.
My love for teaching goes as far back as my high school years. Specifically, in 2004, when I graduated from high school, I decided to take a gap year before enrolling in college. During that time, I worked as a teacher’s assistant in a first grade class. That experience was both enjoyable and humbling for me because aside from performing my assigned duties to enhance t ... read more

What more better experience then to start at home by helping my little brother and sister. For the past five years I have tutored my brother and sister in many different subjects. I have done math, reading, science, history. Basically all elementary subjects.I am Bilingual and speak both English, and Spanish fluently.
I try to make the subjects fun for them. For example i bring out cubes, candy, or fruits for math problems so they can visually see the mathamatical problem. If its science I try to make 3D projects so they can better understand, for example the solar system. I try to get there intrest so they can have fun and not be bored and feel like its a waist of time. I know everyone learns in different ways and I understand that because im the same way. Im very patient, and very easy going. My goal is to give them the education they need to succeed in life.

I love to help people, and I thrive in relationships with others that leave a meaningful impression on both the giver and the receiver. I personally have always tried to achieve academic excellence, and I love to assist others in doing the same. I am a good listener, patient, easy going, and understanding. I have earned a BA from Calvin College which has certified me to teach at the k-8 levels in social studies and liberal arts and have earned a Masters degree in Counseling Education (certified K-12)which has given me the ability to work wtih students who are difficult to motivate and achieve. During my years, I have gained a wonderful rapport with students of all levels (K-12) while working at Huntington Learning Center. My experience is with students of diversity in areas of culture, ethnicity, social, and a wide range of ability.
I know that students can work and achieve if the right kind of motivation is given. Each child has their own learning style and interest which needs to be taken into consideration when working with thenm and then to be taught in that mode and style. My goal for the student is to learn through motivation when the interest is used in the lessons which w ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I worked as a substitute teacher for a charter high school in St. Louis, MO directly out of undergrad. I taught most subjects including Biology, Chemistry, Algebra, History and Language Arts. I feel comfortable in my ability to teach most subjects and have no issue working in difficult classrooms as I have grown accustomed to such environments working in St. Louis.
Being no stranger to difficult classroom settings, I understand that ideal teaching conditions rarely exist. I enjoy to challenge of encouraging more distracted students to learn, and possess the compassion and patience to work with most students. If a teacher can earn a student's respect, which comes easier for a younger instructor such as myself, then positive reinforcement has a much greater impact on that student's motivation to learn. My experience teaching lends the skill to gain student's trust in confidence ... read more
