A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked in a wide range of business and educational settings and have worked with students from grade school to adult. When I earned my BS in English, with a thirty credit business minor, I already had fifteen years experience working in a family run retail store. I have since worked a range of jobs including teaching business, computer and English classes. I also worked as a computer systems installer, service manager and office manager. I bring to my teaching a wide range of experience combined with a strong understanding of my subject areas.
As a teacher I believe that students learn best by doing, so I plan my lessons to engage students with meaningful activities that are mastered with hands on activity rather than teacher lead discussion.

Most of my teaching experience is from one to one tutoring. I have tutored over 20 students and always received compliments regarding my reliability, punctuality, style and patience. I have tutored for students with ages raging from 14 to 25 years old and included algebra, geometry, calculus, physics, etc. I worked as an 8th grade math teacher for a Catholic School as well. I lectured algebra and geometry to 3 different groups of 50 to 55 students.
My one to one teaching style is tailored to adapt to the students learning style. However, my experience shows that keeping the student active during the learning process promotes a better learning. I use Microsoft Excel during my lessons. I create formulas, graphs, etc. and the Excel spreadsheet and ask the student to enter the data so that he/she can see how things change with different entries. From 1997 to 2008 I was a school technologist in Maine public schools. I organized extracurricular programs, worked with individual students and small groups, and co-taught math and science classes. My teaching centered on math, computers, physics, and general science. Some of my extracurricular activities included a robotics club; summer computer programming classes for early elementary students; and field expeditions to study insects.
