Elementary Math is one of my top subjects! A method I commonly employ in teaching math, especially math that involves processes, is to bring the student to the place where he or she both understands the concept and is able to orally explain it to me. After that, I have the student explain the process in writing. It is amazing what a difference this makes for the child's learning and mastery of the concepts. I also use a lot of manipulatives and hands-on learning strategies.

I've got around 8 years of college and university work under my belt, and I am getting ready to finish a BA in Elementary Education from Western Governors University. I love teaching. I got the teaching bug while teaching English as a Foreign Language in China. I taught there for almost 9 years altogether, 1 year in Beijing, 7 years in Tianjin, and 1 year in Taiwan. I now work as a substitute teacher for Lewis County Schools and I also volunteer in the school library where I help struggling students with reading.
I am very active in the classroom and I believe in making learning fun and enjoyable. There are so many ways to help children learn, yet many of them are not used for one reason or another. I love to learn, which is why I love teaching children. Every child learns differently, because of this, teaching is a learning process as well! I believe that students learn best through hands on activities that allow them to internalize the concepts they are struggling with. Whether it is using math manipulatives to understand multiplication and division or using letter tiles to understand consonant blends in reading, hands on activities are the best way to learn.
As an education major at Berea College, I volunteered my services as a tutor three nights a week in addition to my student teaching and education courses. I was also a Pre-Kindergarten teacher during the summer terms while I was in college. I am certified to teach all subjects grades K-5. I have my masters degree in Reading and Literacy Instruction. I currently teach Pre-Kindegarten in Lexington.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style involves what the student wants to achieve out of my teachings. For example i ask the students during their first lesson, "What musical groups and styles inspire you?" This way I can get a feel for what they are looking for. I also do from beginner to advanced theory techniques with notation, playing with a metronome, flash cards, etc. Teaching is a HUGE part of my life and i couldn't be easier to get along with. Love working with all ages, especially the little ones considering i love to be a role model to them.
