Reading Comprehension is one of my top subjects! I am currently attending Harding University to become a Reading Specialist. I am close to graduating, and have been trained in Common Core, have written about and studied the latest research in reading comprehension, and have applied what I have learned in lesson plans, tutoring, and working with students for graduate classes. As a high school English teacher I consistently raised reading comprehension in all of my students. I am a certified English teacher, but I am currently in the process of getting my teaching certificate renewed.

I believe in engaging the students in their learning. In order to avoid boredom and to get students active in their learning, they need to move, collaborate, and have discussions and Socratic Circles to debate and argue their ideas in a reasonable way to prepare them for what goes beyond grade school. Students should be involved in projects that involve creation, and thinking outside of the box. We should be teaching our students to use digital tools in order to take an interest in learning outside of the classroom. And because of so much technology, students have information at their fingertips, which means instead of memorization and recall questions, we should have students explain what they have learned through a variety of methods using a variety of research. Also as teachers, we should be guides to the students as they navigate through the information overload and prepare to e ... read more

If you want something bad enough, you must fight for it.

I am patient but firm. If a student isn't willing to put in a 100% effort then I will not waste my time. I have always gotten exemplary grades from anyone I've tutored. I teach each student differently, some are more visual, or auditory, or hands-on, and I adjust my methods to better benefit my students. Bottom line: I will work hard for you, and I expect you to work hard for you too.
I have always written, and I have always loved doing it. The same goes for reading. I have tutored various class mates through college, and have also worked at a children's enrichment center (I am currently employed there) where I teach basic reading and writing. I am also currently editing a friends novel. I made the Dean's list two years in a row, graduated with the two highest literary awards under my belt, and I have been published in the Equinox and In My Lifetime.

My comments on tutoring Reading Comprehension : Worked with students aged 7-12 for 3 years

I have worked with young children ages 3-11 in a school setting for the last 8 years. I have taught phonics, early reading, early math skills and writing skills within the British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. Most recently the UK promoted learning through fun and play which added more songs and interaction with children ages 2-5. I have the skills, materials and experience to help your youngster with learning the basics. You would be amazed at the results

I have earned my Master's and Bachelors and am currently seeking my PHD. I enjoy learning and sharing knowledge with others. My business degrees, and over 10 years of professional experience in the workforce, I am a confident instructor in Mathematics, English and Communications. I have utilized my minor in Interpersonal Communications by making sure I explain directions and lessons in which my students can understand.
My teaching style is whatever best fits the student. When working one on one with a student I practice a few different methods of teaching and whichever one they feel the most comfortable with and I receive the most attentiveness from, is the one that I continue to use. For example, some students prefer that you walk them through a lesson, go over a few practice problems and then let them work on assignments, knowing that they have you to assist them when needed ... read more

I consider myself a facilitator, not an authoritarian. I ascribe to the principles set forth by Malcolm Knowels and Benjamin Bloom. I rely on the strength and motivation of the student. I hesitate to call myself "teacher." I think I serve better as a guide which, hopefully, leads his client not just to a more enlightend place, but also to the place the client wants to be, or had in mind in the first place.
I started teaching Music in 1984. I taught part-time, temporary while pursuing education goals and working as a professional musician. In 1998 I became an adult educator, and in the following nine years I taught GED, Workforce, Computer and ESL. I learned to speak Spanish from some of my ESL students. Today I run a new program called Bachillerato de las Americas en Arkansas, comprised of curricula obtained from Kingston, Jamaica and Heredia, Costa Rica. I enjoy teaching all ag ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have earned a BS in Chemistry and a minor in Math. I am currently working as a chemist, so I have kept up with all the new studies that are taking place right now. I have tutored all through High School, College and thereafter. I have a real passion for learning math, all sciences, and history. I hope I can pass this respect for these studies on to everyone I teach.
I believe we all learn in different ways, and I am always open minded in finding the best way for that student I am working with at that time. I believe everyone can achieve the highest of goals if we all strive for that success and find out a way to get there. However, most of all I hope I can leave a feeling of respect for the studies and for the people around us.

A Little Bit About Me...

I tailor my approach to instruction to meet individual needs. Ideally, all instruction (but especially personal tutoring) will conform itself to the needs of every student. While each mind is unique, encouragement and challenge cultivate excellence impartially; in light of this, I strive to create an environment that fosters excellence. My personality conveys a simplicity and enjoyment of learning that produce results - and I hope, a desire in my students for further pursuit of understanding and knowledge. This desire then, given that the efforts of the parents and tutor bear good fruit, will extend itself into all areas of students' lives and propel them forward to great things previously perceived to be beyond their reach.
My experience includes private applied instruction in Voice, Piano, and Drama; substitute classroom instruction for various subjects at both elementary and ... read more

My personal approach to learning is to instill confidence by assuring every student that he or she is smart, and capable of doing well at anything they set their mind to. Good spelling, grammar, and composition skills can be achieved by anyone; and will set students apart by providing the confidence to succeed both as a student, and throughout our adult lives. My glass is always half full, and I exude a fun, personable, and positive, attitude that puts others at ease. I am an active listener, and communicate well with students of all ages.
I earned my B.A. in English Literature from the University of Arkansas in 2004. While enrolled in Spanish classes, I volunteered with the Amigos Program. I was assigned to students whose parents spoke little or no English and were unable to help with homework. I helped students practice for spelling tests and improve their reading skills. A Little Bit About Me...

While enrolled in the teacher certification program with Hendrix College, I mentored/tutored an eighth grader in various subjects. I enjoyed the one-on-one experience thoroughly and quickly returned to tutoring at Arkansas School for the Blind. During my three years of employment with ASB, I improved ACTAAP reading scores of two students with reading/learning impairments after one year of tutoring sessions from Below Basic to Basic. I have tutored students in all levels of reading and literature, basic math, algebra, and the sciences.
I have a strong constructivist teaching style: I do my best to connect a student's prior knowledge and experiences to new knowledge in order to build on his or her experience, thereby creating a foundation for intrinsic learning. My reading lessons are technically rigorous, but are supplemented with frequent discussion to check for understanding. ... read more
