I like to understand where the students are coming from, and see if I can make the topic more understandable. My thought is to make the student understand the topic, not just get by.
I have been teaching for six years at the Southwest Colorado Community College. I have taught basic mathematics to algebra III. (Math 121) I also have done quite a bit of tutoring with those in my class, and those not in my class (statistics and calculus). I have taught for the gateway to college program. It is a program that helps high school drop outs get their high school diplomas, and get a start in college. I enjoy working one on one with a wide variety of students - those with solid backgrounds in mathematics, as well as those who have had difficulties with mathematics their entire lives. In fact, I believe that one of the biggest reasons a child/teen/adult needs tutoring in mathematical sciences often stems from something missing in their early years of learning math. I can tutor any aged person. I enjoy getting the student to relate - what is often an uncomfortable subject for them - to the real world and to enhance their own personal future opportunities.
