I am a trained and experienced Orton Gillingham tutor. I have been tutoring 1:1 since 2002 in the Massachusetts and Nashua, NH area. I also tutor students with Executive Functioning disorder in study and organizational skills. My goal is to help students become self-competent and self-confident. For over three years I worked as a writing tutor for Southern Utah University's Writing Center where I helped students improve both their academic and creative writing. A Little Bit About Me...

I've been teaching since I was an 18-year-old Navy Hospital Corpsman in the 1970's. I tutored math, Biology and Chemistry during undergrad and med school and helped friends with the grammar for their research papers. I'm weary of dealing with managed care and am currently a little over than a year away from getting my Masters in Education.
I believe all children want to learn. Sometimes it takes some work to find the spark that ignites the learning process. Unfortunately, a larger classroom may not be the best environment to find that spark in some kids. I've been successful with both children and adults because I have a knack for finding out what motivates them. Once I know something about how a student thinks, I can better come up with concepts that will help her or him understand the subject.

In the last few semesters I've implemented through Blackboard some online testing, as well as tutorial "homework" quizzes, where the students get feedback directing them to coverage of particular sections of the text. I always try to make students aware of how the detailed, technical concepts of the moment fit into the "big picture," making references both to material previously covered and to material yet to come.
