I believe as an educator you have to understand the topic you are teaching and the students your are teaching. As a teacher you are dealing with various levels of learning as well different personalities. I believe you have to be open to what works for the individual and the classroom. Many young students do not understand why they must learn and why it is important. We as educators must show students how education applies to all life, especially theirs. I have taught art to students since 1981. High school students have been my assistants through the summer youth employment program, for 3 NYC public mural projects. I have taught as an artist-in the-schools since 1985, teaching grammar school students printmaking and mural making, both in Brooklyn NY and in the Hudson Valley. Most recently, I taught homeschooled students drawing and painting in the New Paltz area of the Hudson Valley, NY.
I teach with a focus on self exploration plus knowledge of natural forms. In other words, I encourage students to express themselves in their own unique way, yet I teach all the natural forms, including fauna and flora, perspective and the human form, by drawing examples.
