I love teaching all grades and levels. The most important aspect of teaching is to know your student. Each individual learns in different ways, some are tactile learners, some are visual, and some are auditory learners. Incorporating all aspects into my teaching style assists the retention of the material. It also has to be relatable to the student, so we have to use relevant examples that they understand. All children can learn any subject if you can spark their interest. There is no better feeling than seeing the light turn on and the sense of accomplishment in a child's eyes.

A Little Bit About Me...

I received my BS in Biology from UNCW and for the last 15 years I have been an Environmental Chemist. Now, I am pursuing my true calling as an educator. It was a regular part of my job to teach and train new grad students and employees and also to do community outreach. In the latter role, I was guest lecturer on three occasions at Brunswick Community College and taught fourth graders about pet waste and storm water runoff during the "Scoop Your Poop on the Loop" campaign.
I believe educating is a matter of connecting with students in order to learn how to break down complex concepts so they can understand. I have recently graduated from UNCW with a BS degree in chemistry. I have taken mainly math and science classes for the past three years. I have participated in many study groups and helped many other students who were in math and science classes by tutoring them.
I like to work through each type of problem step by step creating a blue print of what the student should be doing to solve each type of problem. I then repeat this with another problem of the same type. I like to go through every type of problem like this while they write the steps of how to do the problem down and then try to solve each problem step by step. I like to emphasize that they write neatly so they can see clearly what they are doing and what they have done so they can quickly go back through the problem and check for mistakes.

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching comes easy to me because I was taught very well. In high school I was the president of the FTA club where we would go to local elementary and middle schools to educate children of all educational capacity and mental handicaps. Patience is a valuable skill I had to develop early on, as well as many others, in working with children. My teaching method is to first take the teaching subject(s) and break them down into correlating groups. Then I would see how I would explain that to someone who knows absolutely nothing about the subject. Then explain the material in a slow and efficient manner and repeat if necessary. I love working with children, young adults, and adults.

The best way to describe my teaching style is to find a creative way to remember material. For example, I have a child that had to memorize his prepositions. We made up a song that included them all, in order. It turned out to something like this....ABOARD a ship AS we were traveling ABOUT eight knots, etc. This style was very effective for memorizing. For subjects that require more understanding than memorizing, I prefer my "teach and try" method. This means that I go through multiple problems with a student explaining the steps involved. Then, I set-up a mock test to test their abilities solo. I therefore can grasp their understanding and pinpoint their weaknesses.
