A Little Bit About Me...

I am currently a substitute teacher in the New Hanover County school system. I have 4+ years teaching in middle school and high school classes. I have prepared and taught classes during my previous career with the Federal Government to adults. My major in Biology gave me a strong background in the sciences and math. I have always found these subjects interesting as well as essential for success in work. I try and communicate my enthusiasm for these subjects to my students. I relate well to youngsters and teenagers and they respond by treating them as responsible young people.

I am a recent graduate of UNCW with a BA in English and a teaching certification in Secondary Education. Currently interning in the Wilmington area, I have been working with 9th and 10th graders in English, developing basic writing and critical reading skills. Over the last four years, I have also tutored in Algebra I, Geometry, History and Science for grades 6-12.
I enjoy working with students, especially middle school and high school, and seeing them have a "lightbulb moment". This is the moment they finally realize that they understand what they have been struggling with. I pride myself on my ability to provide students with various learning experiences for all subjects. I not only believe that all students can learn, but that all students learn in various methods. My preferred teaching method is a combination of Constructivism (hands-on, inquiry-based learning) and Behaviorism (rewards and consequences); however, I strive to internally motivate my students, and I find that making work relevant and meaningful has the greatest effect on learning. All interactions with students should be positive (even consequences, not to be confused with "happy" or "non-confrontational"), understandable, and challenging for the student. My ultimate goal is to make students self-advocates in their learning, lives, and goals.
