My teaching style is a combination of techniques I found successful during my educational studies. First, I believe the teacher has to be passionate and have a true love for what he or she is doing; this is passion, or lack thereof, is evident when interacting with a student. Second, patience is of upmost importance. In my experience, nothing inhibits learning as much as a rushed or pressured feeling when one is trying to learn. Finally, it is critical to find a way for the student to relate to the material in a way they understand. Each person is different and the teaching style should reflect that; not everyone fits nicely into a cookie cut template of learning. A Little Bit About Me...

I spent my entire teaching career at Hammondsport Central School in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of New York State. In that time, I taught every level of every grade (7-12). In addition to the basic high school English curriculum, I designed and taught four electives which became a permanent part of the program. I can teach anything in this field, including test preparation. Since I have been retired, I have worked with several Korean students and one Russian one.
I would describe my teaching style as ecclectic. Students learn in different ways which enables me to employ all kinds of methods to tap into any particular learning style. For instance, I believe in old-fashioned memorization (math. facts) in addition to hands-on kind of learning. If I am tutoring a young person I contact the teacher so that I can find out what areas the student needs review in. Many times the teacher will give me the resources and materials to use. Also, I like to use the guide books for each grade that are sold in stationary areas of most stores. For tutoring in reading I've found the Leapfrog Reading Program is very helpful. I like to meet my students at the library so that I can use the resources found in the library, including the computer. Many times I use educational games because are very useful tools in learning, and they are fun.

I think it is important to identify what the student needs to work on and present it in a way the student can grasp the concept and enjoy learning. The student has to enjoy learning to succeed. I try to present material in such a way that the student will find it interesting and use different techniques to help them remember what they have learned.
