A Little Bit About Me...

I worked as a teacher's assistant for several years in public schools in Illinois, assisting in K-5 classrooms. I worked at Sylvan Learning Center for 2 years, teaching beginning reading and elementary reading. As I gained experience, I began tutoring students in the school district where I worked. After several years, I became a fifth grade teacher in a private school where I taught for 5 years. In this position, I worked with students on writing skills, and prepared students for our annual math olympics, science fair, and spelling competitions. I tutored individual 4th and 5th graders after school.

I have earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Secondary Education from Western Michigan University, and I am currently taking graduate courses at Western, working toward a Master's degree in the Practice of Teaching. I have been substituting in Michigan and Indiana schools, including two long-term substitute positions, including New Buffalo High School, in New Buffalo Michigan, and Kessling Middle School in La Porte, Indiana. I have designed and presented Creative Writing Workshops for 1st through 5th grade students and I was a Language Arts Enrichment teacher at the Bison After School Enrichment, in which I had my own classroom and tutored kindergarten through 8th grade students in language arts, focusing on creating poetry.

After receiving the Ph.D. from Notre Dame in 1985, I taught at Saint Mary’s College, Purdue University North Central, and Notre Dame, and currently am teaching selected courses – just one each term – for Trine University. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies from Purdue University with a focus on Modern English Literature. I have also spent several years as a full-time substitute teacher for a number of Northwest Indiana city school systems including Portage, Westville, Michigan City, LaPorte, and Valparaiso.
