I find that students benefit greatly by becoming active participants in the teaching process. I try to develop a curriculum that students help determine, and create lessons that center around topics that interest the students and apply to their lives in a real and practical manner. I try to begin a dialogue with students whenever possible, but also try to know when students would benefit more from direct instruction from their teacher.
I am very passionate about teaching and instructing young people. That is why I have spent time volunteering to teach English to children in Mexico, working as a counselor at youth camps for several years, and establishing a school outreach program for local art galleries. I firmly believe that every child is capable of learning hard concepts, they just have to be taught in a way that is applicable to them. So I first like to get to know the student and try to figure out their learning style and teach them according to how they learn. This helps me figure out where the root of the problem is so I can fix it. Then I like to use a lot of visual and hands-on lessons because children need that to really grasp concepts and to apply it in different situations. I also like to question them to lead them to come to the answer and concepts themselves in order to increase their curiosity, desire to learn, and self-esteem.
