I worked at Moorpark College as an ESL and Writing Tutor, helping students discover ways to identify and clarify ideas, refine a topic, outline ideas, and develop the skills needed to work independently. I have my BA from Scripps College in both English and History. I have significant experience tutoring within the humanities, but also German, math and the sciences. I started college as a Biology major, so I have a firm grounding in mathematics and the sciences, which I have bolstered to prepare for graduate school in Architecture. I earned a Bachelor of Science from The Ohio State University in 1984. My subjects of passion were math and science and I enjoy working with children who struggle in those areas. I have home schooled my son through the end of 12th grade and he was ready for college freshman classes at age 15. Starting in his second grade year, we were joined by a student who has learning disabilities. He also thrived in the tutorial teaching environment. My desire is to work with children who really desire to learn but need that extra time and encouragement to succeed.
I have experience working with both audio/visual learners and a kinesthetic/tactile learner. Some of my most rewarding times in life have been those when I help a student understand a concept that has bewildered him. I am usually able to find a unique way to make the student think about his learning. I try to teach to mastery. I don't believe efficient learning takes place in any discipline if one hasn't mastered some of the basic principles. I encourage exploration of alternative methods for problem solving.
