With younger students, I tend to be much more directive so that we accomplish intended learning. With middle and high school students, I ask "Why" and "How do you know" quite often so that they learn to provide evidence for their thinking. My approach to tutoring is that all students are capable of learning. Kids often benefit from a fresh perspective and it is my job to make them more confident again. I try to explain to the students that once the rules are understood it becomes simple to get to the final result.
