I am the author of five historical novels and a number of articles, poems and short stories. I occasionally do short “residences” teaching Language Arts and Drama to special needs students in k-12 schools for VSA Arts of Florida. My graduate studies emphasized American and Tudor/Stuart History. My doctorate included a Criminal Justice minor. I regularly teach writing and grant writing seminars to adults, usually through libraries on weekends or in the evening.
I believe everyone will respond well to individualized instruction when the tutor studies the student's learning style and offers the information in the form best suited to each learner. I am patient and encouraging with students. I work hard to find ways to present a subject so that each learner will find it interesting.

After receiving my teaching certificate from the State of California, I taught in Oakland, California public schools for nine years, and was appointed a Mentor Teacher. I left Oakland in 1996, and taught for nine more years in Berkeley. I became known as an outstanding teacher of writing and reading, and also served as School Literacy Coach, leading monthly workshops for teachers in the best practices for English literacy. In 2005 I left Berkeley to operate a practice as Literacy Consultant, assessing and tutoring adolescents and adults in need of reading, writing or study skills support. I've been told that I have a unique style of teaching. I like to teach using rhymes, antonyms, and relating the subject to familiar life situations.
