Every one can learn. Sometimes an individual learns in their own unique style and finding that style is the key to teaching them. The best way to teach someone is to guide them when they come to a road block, rather than to give them the answer. The amount of pride and prestige that comes from having figured out a problem on their own is the most important thing.
I've always loved to read, I inhereited it from my father who got it from his father. I'm an avid writer as well. I currently write book reviews for The San Francisco Book Review and the San Diego Book Review. You'll find samples of my work at http://www.thereadingcan.blogspot.com . I really feel I can help youth and young adults learn to read. Currently I work with individuals who have disabilities to find and maintain work. I would like to help youth and young adults with disabilities learn to read as well.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a strong believer in leading by example. When given a task, I fulfill it to the best of my abilities, taking responsibility for it's completion and encourage those around me to do the same. As opposed to criticizing, I focus on the positive aspects of people's abilities and build confidence with that foundation. With that said, I do maintain high but reasonable expectations while providing the support necessary for success.
I served in the Straight Up AmeriCorps as a member for two years, specializing in tutoring and mentoring in a high school setting. I was responsible for teaching and leading programs for students as well as organizing events. Once completed, I was hired by a local non-profit to administer services and manage a Family Literacy program for 20 families. My duties included direct mentoring and tutoring, as well as identifying and implementing learning programs ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have always enjoyed teaching. I try to take into consideration the individual's learning style when teaching. Many kids learn best when a "hands on" approach is incorporated into the lecture or instruction. I am laid back, patient, have a good sense of humor, and have never had difficulties connecting with youth of all ages. Sometimes, I have used creative ways to teach. I feel it is important to hold the interest of a student and ignite a childs' natural curiosity.
The majority of my experience lies within the field of Human Services/Counseling. However, I have substitute taught for about 18 months, elementary level and high school level. In addition, I have tutored foreign languages on a college level for two semesters.

A Little Bit About Me...

As an average person, I enjoy teaching children the values and importance of their education while befriending them and understanding where they are in relation to their social-emotional, physical, and educational development.
No two children are the same, and we know that this is correct, so therefore it applies to their learning ability as well. Some children need visual simulation to really ingrain the principle that is trying to be understood. While other's learn by complete repetition. My teaching style is all relative to the child and the subject area being covered.

A Little Bit About Me...

As an undergraduate at MIT, I have a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, and have complete master of those taught at the high school level. I have also completed several advanced courses in chemistry, biology, and physics, but am still young enough to remember the techniques I used to learn those subjects when I myself was a high school student. I have prepared many students (privately) for final exams in biology, geometry, and algebra.
I have a knack for creating analogies and mechanisms to help students remember things for exams, as well as strategies and ways of thinking that may be a little different than what was taught in class (but still gets them to the final result). I really want to help kids succeed in school and be in charge of their learning even after I am no longer their tutor. I like to inspire them to learn.

In the process of earning my BA in History (minor in Archaeology), I became familiar with a broad range of historical subjects. My certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) gave me a familiarity with mathematics and statistics, as well as conventions of scientific research and reporting. My MA required a publication-ready thesis, which would not have been possible without organization and self-motivation.
It is widely acknowledged that students learn in a variety of ways. In a tutoring environment, I believe in discovering each student’s optimal learning strategy, as well as identifying techniques for making other styles of teaching accessible. I aim to enable further education, as well as transmit more urgently needed information.

My strengths are in identifying a students weaknessess and giving them the tools needed to succeed. I provide the best that I have to give and know that the student will respond with his or her best as well. I believe that each student learns at a different pace and I have the tools necessary as their tutor to help them achieve their stated goals. I feel it is a privilage to teach and to learn myself from the students!
As a graduate of The Kings College the professors taught me the value of working with children on an individual basis. They taught me that there are many different learning styles a student may have. This is what got me interested in the Title 1 Program. As a tutor in this program my focus was Reading and Math at the elementary level. My job was ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Ever since I was in high school, I have always enjoyed working with children in a variety of situations. I helped out in a second grade classroom and enjoyed helping students understand their classwork. Even in college, I enjoyed helping my friends with math and writing. Last year, I taught a self-contained sixth grade classroom and this year, I taught a multi-age first and second grade classroom in the same school.
My creativity allows me to come up with different teaching ideas depending on the child's needs. Differentiated instruction has helped me to reach the needs of all learners and positive reinforcement has helped to motivate students to want to do well. I believe that the social aspect of a child's life is just as important as the academics. Once these needs are met, children are more apt to reach their fullest potential.

More About This Tutor...

I recently graduated in Economics from Bishop's University. In my final year at Bishop's, I taught a couple tutorials to assist students in lower level economics courses. In addition, I succeeded quite well in 4 mathematical courses in my final year, averaging 26% above the class average (in Matrix Algebra, Linear Algebra, Ordinary Differential Equations and Advanced Calculus II). Previously, while attending Brigham Young University, I spent one year teaching Indonesian at the Missionary Training Center. This job was extended to me by virtue of my experience teaching in the Indonesian language while serving a mission for two years.

I am very relaxed around children, and I try to create a patient and encouraging learning environment. I will often answer a question with a question in order to teach students to approach subjects with inquisitiveness and reason. When this approach is not appropriate to the question being asked, I encourage logical thinking, taking the question and its answer step-by-step to their rational conclusion. Additionally, because my love of literature is supported by my interest in history, I try to present ideas across disciplines whenever possible to give a more complete picture. In this way, I strive to empower students to think clearly, organize their ideas rationally, and express themselves effectively.

I believe that a teacher’s primary job is to inspire, assist and guide instead of merely giving right answers. Furthermore, I find that in order to successfully facilitate a learning process you have to use the skills and personality of the individual as your starting point and apply the method best suited for a given student. I am a dedicated, outgoing and ambitious teacher who believes in leading by example, and I am truly passionate about the field of sociology. It is my opinion that social science courses pose a unique opportunity to give people an understanding of fundamental social processes and thereby encourage them to think critically and take personal responsibility.

I am passionate about igniting a child's natural inquisitiveness to facilitate learning. It is my firm belief that education must be more than memorization. A student must be able to incorporate the information that they are learning into their schema and make connections. I firmly believe that every child has the ability to be a great student. It is simply up to the teacher to identify what will inspire that student to greatness.
I am a Teach for America teacher. This means that in 2009, I applied with 40,000 applicants and was among the 4000 selected to become a teacher in a Title One school.
