A Little Bit About Me...

I hold an English degree from a program that largely overlapped with Education - basically, I have studied teaching as a student at college. On the other end of the spectrum, I have been a substitute educator for Capital Region BOCES for 3 years, working with teaching professionals on short-term assignments. Through this experience I believe I have gathered a good deal of craft in the area of special-needs learning.
I think it is more important to understand the student than to understand the material. Don't get me wrong - as a teacher I always re-educate myself to the material if need be - but I feel my real strength as an educator lies in finding a new way to teach the same concept. In my work with The Boy's and Girl's Club, Americorps, Y.M.C.A. and the Hispanic Outreach Center I have completed more than 1000 tutoring session; in over 50 Schenectady Schools, community programs and public libraries. In each one to one experience, the child improved at least 2-grade level in reading comprehension and 1-grade level in math. Sine high school, I have worked with children in BOCES. However, I started college later in life, after children and marriage. I wanted to provide my children with an education that I couldn't afford since I knew nothing of grants in 1974. I started with my AA and did not stop until I achieved my MS. My education has taught me discipline, research, study habits, and critical thinking skills. After receiving my bachelor's degree, I went to school part time to work on my Master's degree while subbing in area schools. I accepted a position as a teaching assistant, and two long term positions. I also tutored a junior high school student in all subjects.
I'm very eager to teach. I love to be able to help children succeed and learn new things. I do whatever it takes to make this happen, and adjust my style as needed for each student. I like to make a difference, especially through education.
