First teaching job was in a school for severely autistic children. After being there for a year I taught in a residential home for boys. This was challenging but probably one of my favorite jobs as a teacher. Because of the distance from home to work (about 1-1/2 hrs.), I applied at an urban school 20 minutes from my home. My first job there was managing the Young Parents Program. This was a program for high school girls who were pregnant or had already had a child. This program allowed the young girls to attend school. Due to budget restrictions it was cut. I was offered a position as a special education teacher in the high school. I believe that being a coach, and mentor is the best way to teach children. I think that "hands on" training, or "on the job" training is the best way to learn. This is mostly true throughout our entire lives. Providing guidance, and answering questions rather than doing the work for them.
