Helping students learn and learn how to grow

My teaching experience is broad across subjects and age levels. Learning and teaching excite me and I like to think that attitude rubs off on my students. It can be fun to learn, and even those subjects a student does not find enjoyable, can prove satisfying. I've taught middle school and high school, as well as at Bellevue College, Renton technical College, and North Seattle Community College. My own experiences include not just teaching, but also professional broadcasting, journalism (both broadcast and print newswriting, creative writing, editing, and reporting), writing a book, supervising employees as well as students, and poetry awards.
I like students to be comfortable, enjoy their experiences with me as much as possible, and learn not only the material they need to study, but also habits and practices that will help them with future studies.

I write with great enthusiasm to apply for the position of Tutor. I recently graduated from Gettysburg College Magna Cum Laude earning my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Neuroscience. I have previous experience working as a Clinician/Tutor for Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, providing one-on-one instruction to students and implemented programs that provided effective treatment for dyslexia, hyperlexia, autism, and other learning disabilities. Further, I have years of experience volunteering as a tutor, instructing students of all ages (including high school) in various subjects.
I have found that tutoring sessions are most effective when they are fun! Many students find it difficult to stay focused, especially after a full school day. For this reason, I prefer to change tasks frequently and use a variety of fun games to switch up the pace of the session. Learning ca ... read more

As a psychology major I was fascinated with how the mind works in all arenas. I learned the various methodologies used in teaching people and found in my tutoring that finding a way to present even the most difficult material in a manner to make it understandable is greatly satisfying. Through tutoring and teaching others I gained a higher comprehension of the material at hand and learned more about both myself and people in general. I firmly believe that there's no such thing as an idea or topic that can not be taught to someone who wants to learn regardless of academic leveling.
For as long as I can remember I have loved to learn. Through college I tutored in psychology, english, the arts, statistical math, and certain classifications of sciences. My favorites were psychology and english because of the freedom you can give due to interpretaional material.

A Little Bit About Me...

While it is my belief that all students have the ability to learn; I also understand that academics can be difficult. It is my job to support students who, for whatever reason, are having a difficult time in school, as well as provide extra support for students who want to get ahead. In the learning environments I provide, students are safe to ask questions, provide ideas and make mistakes while receiving respect and patience. While I support students in a positive manner by giving praise and constructive feedback, I also make sure that students are working hard and receiving authentic responses in a respectful manner.

I help people to understand complex ideas, gain new knowledge by presenting the information that is interesting and easy to follow. I use a lot of analogy when presenting the information. I choose a field the learner is already familiar with and draw analogies from the field to speed up the knowledge transition. I will ensure the learning is fast and fun and lead the learner to wanting more of the knowledge. I make the learner believe learning does not end with passing a course or exam. When I achieve this, I believe great grades in the exam are definite.
My interest in educating others sparked when I first conducted a training program for engineers in my work place. Since then I explored the field of learning and development and gained a lot of knowledge on how knowledge flows from person to person. Inspired by my findings, I did my master’s thesis on Knowledge Management. Tod ... read more

Studies show that people who are used to success are more likely to try again and again when confronted with a challenge. My goal is to build a success-driven environment where the student feels like he/she can do anything. Of course, I challenge the student as well, but first I make sure they feel confident that they can tackle any obstacle they are confronted with. This method does take a little bit of time, but I have noticed that once that student is motivated through success, their academic improvement tends to improve in more than just one or two subjects. School becomes an opportunity to win, rather than a daily chore, and the student is engaged in learning.
My experience in tutoring is a mix of working with large tutoring agencies as well as local one-on-one at home tutoring services. I have worked with students on elementary school math and reading, as well as SAT and ... read more

I enjoy taking what I know about a subject, weighing what my student's learning style is and then tailoring a lesson so that student best understands the material. I welcome the moment when the lesson "clicks" for the student and when subject matter on paper or in a book becomes personal knowledge. To me, the true skill and knowledge of a teacher can only be quantified in how her student apprehends and applies the lesson. There is a world of difference between those who are regarded as experts and those who can take their knowledge and make it available to others. While I do seek to be an expert, I seek even more to help those around me become knowledgeable "peer learners."
While an undergraduate student at a top university, I pushed myself academically. I also focused on trying to help people by teaching resume writing and job interviewing workshops at my university’s Career ... read more

As it has evolved over the years, my teaching style has become a mix of facilitation and direct instruction, with the goal always being the student's making his own discovery. I was trained in the Socratic style, which seems to match well with inquiry-based learning, and that is how my classes usually end up. I introduce activities, then gradually release them to the students to lead.
Over the last 15 years, I have worked in various different areas. First, I taught adult ESL, and had occasional tutoring gigs with Russian speakers learning English, and some English speakers learning Russian. Currently, I work as a special education teacher. Part of my job is to work in small ratios with honors students who have disabilities. This "study skills" class often requires one-on-one tutoring.

I believe education should enrich and engage a students mind. I work very hard to make connections for what students are learning to what they are passionate about. Through strong encouragement and support, I make an effort to give students confidence while challenging them to move forward and deepen their understanding. I strive to give students the means they need to take pride in their work. I have seen so many students flourish after having someone re-explain a concept in a way that makes sense to them. I am willing to put the time and energy it takes to find the explanation that works best for each student. I believe all my students can succeed in their lives.
As a graduate of the University of Washington's English program, I have studied a variety of concepts and theory in literature and critical analysis. I have extensive experience in writing a wide range of papers as well ... read more

More About This Tutor...

As a child, I wasn't very interested in science, math, or the outdoors. It took an inspiring high school teacher who challenged me with interesting projects to show me how fascinating biology and ecology were. I strive to be that kind of teacher- not just to show my students how to get the right answer, but why it's interesting enough to care about. Over the past 5 years, I have taught college biology and ecology laboratory courses, tutored elementary school children in math and reading, and led GRE preparation courses. I have a master's degree in zoology, and my tutoring expertise is in the life sciences, math through Calculus I and statistics, SAT/ACT/GRE preparation, and research writing.
I believe that every child is capable of learning, and once they see how a subject is relevant to their life and goals, they usually want to learn all they can about it. I try to make academic ... read more

I graduated in May 2009 with a BS in Engineering from Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, a prestigious technical school in Needham, Massachusetts. Aside from my engineering coursework, I completed an arts and humanities concentration and capstone in Political Science, focusing on third world development and ethno-political conflict. I served as a course assistant for math and science courses throughout much of college. I mostly tutored first year students (subjects included Calculus, Physics: Mechanics and Electromagnetism, Engineering: modeling, simulation, analysis, and Partial Differential Equations), and did some grading as well. I really enjoy tutoring, both one-on-one and with small groups. As a high school student I took Spanish through AP Spanish Language (and scored a 5 on the AP exam), and took a college level Spanish grammar course beyond that. I also attended an ext ... read more

I am a recent Ph.D. graduate with a strong interest and enthusiasm for the sciences, and ecology in particular. I have extensive experience in biological study design and analysis, data collection and management, and report and manuscript preparation. As a graduate student I spent two years working as a teaching assistant in college-level introductory biology courses. My primary duties as a T.A. involved guiding students through laboratory exercises, assisting students with questions and problem-solving, and grading student homework and test materials. I am adept at communicating scientific concepts, both in person and in writing, and enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for scientific inquiry and learning.

Teaching is my passion. I love working with children and helping them understand that their potential is limitless. I believe that children are able to learn the most through exploring, discovering, and engaging in calm and respectful learning environments. As a facilitator of such an environment, my goal is to employ teaching methods catered to a child‘s specific academic needs. I am an extremely patient, laid back, and easy going. It is my ultimate goal to help children gain the confidence they need to achieve academic success by practice and perseverance.
