As an educator, I strive to improve the student's study habits, test taking skills and overall understanding of the subject. I am patient and encourage questions from the student. Also, I believe that "hands on" practice is the best way to really learn a subject. I like to break things down into smaller parts and let the student practice and grasp each concept instead of just showing them how to do it. Repetition is important to the learning process, so I frequently use practice problems to reinforce the daily lesson. My teaching philosophy centers on individual learning. The first priority is to determine what method is best for getting an individual to process information. The second step is then to breakdown the material and removing the myth that a traditionally challenging course is simply a "myth" and depends solely on the effort given by the student. I utilize a variety of methods (models, flash cards, simplified mechanisms, acronyms, etc) that help simplify the complex material that is presented in lecture. I graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in Sociology. Almost immediately I went to work in the behavioral health field. While there, I found an ability to connect with, and build a rapport with the residents at the facility.
