I engage with a new student for a relationship. I inquire regarding their expectations, concerns, fears, and hopes for tutoring. I then explain my tutoring philosophy. Then, I ask for a diagnosis of how well they are performing the course material subject, and how I can help them best in the first session. I believe that in order to help a student you must first be able to connect with him/her. That could mean understanding a student’s background, researching the latest video games or playing softball after class. For example, several of the girls I worked with at the JEI Learning Center, spoke very little English. Often they got frustrated and just sort of shut down -- stopped responding. At first I tried to have them draw pictures but when that didn't work, I asked them to show me something from home. They folded cranes and strawberries out of the paper that I gave them. Though the exercise didn't help them understand verb tense, it did help build trust between us. After that, when they felt insecure or confused, I was less intimidating. While earning my bachelor's degree, I worked in several tutoring programs assisting students with reading comprehension and writing composition skills.

I have always known I have wanted to be a teacher. I do my best to adjust what I am teaching to what my students actually have passion for. I believe that not all students learn the same and that is some thing we need to constantly be adjusting for. As educators we need to work with the things students already know to really help them to succeed. I am a Math Major at the University of Northern Colorado. I am working on my Secondary Education Licensure in the PTEP (Professional Teacher Education Program) as well. I have done over a year of observations and working directly with students. I have 2 semesters left of classes at Northern Colorado, and will be student teaching next spring.

I taught middle school and high school Language and Literature for two years at a private school. During that time I also tutored in the subjects of history, math, and science. I am currently working on my Masters degree in Education and have had refresher courses in the areas of study outside of my initial degree. I love working with students and have taken courses specifically in test prep. I am an active teacher. I want students to understand the subject in the context of their own lives as opposed to just learning definitions. If they can realate the information to an actual happening, they are more likely to remember. In terms of test preparation, aside from learning the information it is important to work on test-taking skills (relaxation, focus, etc.). Being prepared for such large tests is more than just knowing, it is recalling under pressure. I work with all of that to

I have taught straight skills based lessons, created thematic units that take you across the globe and brought students out into the world to explore problems and challenges like professionals. You tell me how you learn best and I will adapt to fit your needs. From a specialized curriculum to simply walking you through some challenging problems on a homework assignment. I am what you need. After graduating with a degree in Chemistry Education I went off to teach. Six years of professional teaching experience later there are few teaching challenges that I have come up against and not found a working solution to. Native tribes learning math and science, migrant children studying Earth Science, an adult looking for help with some chemistry problems, or an Expeditionary Learning student looking to tackle real world problems; whatever your background or needs I can help. I focus on the individual first - her style of learning, what makes her mind tick, how she responds to different methods of teaching. I believe that people are treated fairly by being treated individually. I also believe that people do not care how much you know until they know how much you care. I strive to set an example of genuine care and concern for the learner. During the last five years I have taught others how to use social media, viral marketing, search engine optimization and social media marketing more effectively. I have been recognized by peers as a leader in the emerging space of social knowledge, which embraces a holistic approach to the social interactions an organization has internally and with customers and partners.

I worked as a tutor all through college at Iowa State University. I tutored Math (up through Trig), general and organic chemistry, and statistics 101. These were the main classes I taught, but I also did Spanish 1, ecology, and food science/nutrition. I also tutored some high school students in all subjects but mostly math and science. I love helping people. I believe that no one is stupid just some people are better in some areas than other people. I enjoy helping people learn because I love seeing the "light bulb click on above their head" when they finally grasp a concept. I try to simplify the subject (or put it in terms the student will grasp) so the student will understand it, thus my teaching method depends on how the student learns.

As an undergraduate, I tutored peers in comprehension and completion of English writing assignments. While in graduate school, I taught second graders the art and craft of poetry writing. I have tutored/taught various groups and individuals, including Bosnian refuges, at-risk youth in residential treatment, and adult community college students. I view the "cognitive reductionism" currently driving educational standardization as problematic. Every single student has already learned a great deal without being taught; an educator’s challenge is to negotiate the various experiences and sociocultural influences to increase student awareness and use of those inherent, autonomous learning capabilities. A succesful teacher can deliver individualized instruction, and promote critical thinking and reciprocal learning experiences.

While at Devry Institute of Technology, I was ranked in the top 3% of National Engineering students. This degree required advanced mathematics including Calculus, differential equations, and network synthesis. It also included computer programming and electronic circuit theory and design. In my career I have taught Windows, MS Office, robotics and programming to adults, helped teenagers graduate from high school, and helped my 7 year old daughter learn math. I believe that everyone, children and adults alike, can learn through patience, creativity and organized lessons. I make it fun and interesting, and possess many years of interesting real world experiences to draw on to help students understand and learn.

As a teacher of multiple grades, I prefer a unit study approach, allowing each child to learn according to his own learning style. Prescribing to a system entitled the 4Mat SystemTM, I have embraced the outcomes of such a system which include improved retention, higher achievement, increased motivation, improved thinking skills, and lower remediation. The 4Mat SystemTM consists of four steps: the first step creates a reason; it motivates the student by making the lesson meaningful to his life. Concept Development gives the facts and is accomplished through research. Next you expand the lesson by letting the student try it out; they should do something with what they have learned. Finally, allow the student to excel by letting them teach it to themselves and others. While this system works well for multiple grade teaching, I am not entirely opposed to a more classical approach. P
