A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching children and working with children's choirs. I had some very fine education classes at Aquinas. I'm very intuitive with children. While you must objectively assess the childs level, you must also be intuitive. The teacher has to tap into the innate knowledge and then approach the method of teaching in the way that child can hear you. I am 47 and a mother of an 11 yr. old. I am patient and kind with children, but overall, what comes through is my whimsical, comical, spontaneous nature. Children take to it because I'm also intelligent as opposed to "clownish". I'm also fairly firm. They have to practice and I know how to motivate them for that. I have high standards for children.

After that I spent several years in a FT professional touring performance ensemble that performed for all ages in a variety of settings across the Midwest. Finally, for the last 15 years, I have taught a variety of college level communication and performance courses, as well as various writing classes. At Hope College I received a liberal arts education. So even though I have a degree in music theatre, I am also well-educated in other fields. For instance I wasn't required to take Calculus in college, however, I took this challenging course and I passed the class with an A. I have also worked at the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre as a teacher’s assistant and camp assistant the past three summers. These camps work with kids from ages 9-13. Along with looking out for the safety of the children, I participated in activities and helped come up with material. I have also worked as a director, producer, and a choreographer. This has allowed me to discover that other people have different ways of learning.
