I traveled for a year with a family and home-schooled their 3 children. The children were in 1st grade, kindergarten, and pre-school and were seriously below grade level in math and reading. In that year, I brought those children beyond grade level in reading skills and comprehension as well as math skills. I have also been a teacher's assistant in 3rd and 4th grade classrooms and have gone through student teaching in the 3rd and 6th grade in order to complete my degree. I have had most of my experience with the elementary age-group but I also feel confident working through some middle school and high school material.

A Little Bit About Me...

Having taught both music and French in a variety of different settings, my teaching style has changed and improved over the years. Today, my teaching is very hands-on and individualized. I strive to make the lessons or tutoring relevant and understandable for each student and give students as many opportunities to participate in their learning as possible, rather than lecturing. I also love to teach using games and creative approaches. For example, when teaching a music theory course to high school students, I designed a card game to help teach the kids how to build scales. I'm very skills-based in my approach to teaching and employ many learning "tricks" involving mnemonics, flash-cards, student-generated learning materials, as well as being able to help the student learn to integrate what she learns into a cohesive and understandable framework for retention. My past seven years working for Measurement Incorporated as a Reader/Scorer for 4th, 5th, 6th and 11th grade writing for several states. This has enabled me to gain an understanding of the writing skills at the elementary level. Therefore, I am most interested in tutoring elementary students in Language Arts.
