Math, Science, Writing, and Critical Thinking

My favorite part about teaching is the moment of sudden understanding that you can see in a student's eyes when they've got it. The challenge, of course, is getting to that moment, especially in a subject like math or science. While certain subjects may come easier to some people than to others, I do not believe that anyone is "incapable" of understanding and excelling in any field of study. If understanding is lacking, that is only because the student needs to be presented the material in a way that makes sense to them.

I enjoy having the freedom to create innovative and interesting ways of presenting material. I believe the student I am working with is the most important part of teaching any subject; I can teach them how to solve a problem, but this information is 'lost to the wind' if it's not sinking in with them. I use skills of observation to judge what is being retained, and what is being lost. There is no harm in repetition, either on a particular problem, or on a whole concept. I like being flexible, and am happy to adjust to each individual's learning style. I graduated this spring with honors from Carleton College. For my senior thesis in Math, three of my colleagues and I designed a Challenge Math curriculum for fifth grade students. Together we compiled our lessons into a book, and once a week each we taught a small group of students. When I moved to Boulder this summer, I began tutoring CU students, adults taking online courses, and high school students. I also have experience tutoring for the SAT, ACT, and GRE.
My teaching style depends on the student.
