I've taken several courses in Shakespeare, but since graduating college the only thing my anthology has been good for is standing on to reach things on high shelves. I'd love to put it to good use again! Because English and literature is subjective, I use a nondirective approach to ensure that the student is exercising their creative problem solving skills and critical thinking skills. Basically, I ask them about their interpretation of the text or their own writing. With grammar, I typically model the correct use for the student two or three times, and then have them finish finding patterns and correcting mistakes themselves. I believe it is important to get to know my students by discovering their likes and dislikes about reading and writing, what their interests are, and assessing their confidence levels. While there is no substitute for understanding the "rules" of composition, I believe that learning to enjoy the subject is priority one. By reducing the student's fears or concerns and making it fun, understanding and fluency will eventually follow.
