Knowledge and skills are most permanent when we discover and create for ourselves, so I like to be a guide that leads the student to their own conclusions, rather than take over and lecture. I will be there to direct and support the student; I like when the student works at the board or on the paper instead of me, so that they retain what is being taught. I am very patient, and will work with the student on a subject until it is truly understood, and for more algorithmic tasks, until the student can quickly produce the correct answer.
Tutoring my fellow classmates was an integral part of my college experience. At Yuba College, I tutored math and chemistry in the College Success Center for two school years. Upon matriculation at Colby, I enrolled in organic chemistry and decided to major in chemistry. I continued my studies in chemistry and additional areas of interest, including math, government, and economics. Before graduating I participated in an NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates at UC Riverside. With the guidance of my primary investigator and a grad student, I gained experience doing research into the fabrication of nano-structures (in this case, reusable and gas-specific sensing devices, or an "e-nose"). Students provided a group presentation using PowerPoint and presented their results during a poster session. I have been tutoring chemistry at Clever Minds in Truckee, CA, since January 2010.
