As a graduate student studying biology at the New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU), I was a teaching assistant (TA) assisting in preparing and conducting laboratory experiments in biology with undergraduate students at NMHU. I prepare laboratory research outlines before sessions and grade laboratory reports. My method is to reach students exactly where there at and use methods that would stimulate all types of learners . Once I was teaching a group of sixth graders who would be entering Algebra soon. I gave them a true life math example. Our equasion; a party with the number of students, quantity of different items and costs. When we devided the items their costs with the number of students we came up with how much each student had to pitch in. In this example I had some items that were to be used and they were able to touch them. I also told them very clearly what was going on while I was writing it all down. I graduated with my Master's in Chemical Engineering in 1985 and have used that experience and my life experience to excel at the tutoring that I have done over the last 15+ years. I have tutored all levels of mathematics, high school and college Chemistry and SAT/ACT preparation and study. My education has been invaluable to my ability to help students excel. I don't know that I favor any particular style of teaching, I just try to relate to the student. I find out what he/she likes doing, and I try to find examples and analogies using these things. I also try to find more than one way of explaining things. This seems to ensure that the student is acturally learning processes and not just answering the question. I have obtained my masters degree in education and now have three years experience teaching math. In particular, I have instructed 7th and 8th grade middle school students as well as 9th – 12th grade high school students.
