I have taught private music lessons since 2006. My primary instrument is piano. I have tutored English, Math and Science for the last 3 years. My students have achieved fantastic results. Although I do not teach to tests or scores of any kind, but only to the needs I see in the student, I have been amazed at how quickly t it reflects on their scores, and more importantly, on their self-confidence and motivation. I got my first teaching experience as a lab instructor for undergraduate physics labs and fell in love with the profession. The best part of the experience is seeing the student grasp a concept that they felt out of reach. I enjoy coming up with inventive ways of communicating the difficult portions of math and science. I graduated in 1999 from NMSU with a degree in Elem/Spec Education. While attending school, I worked in a group home for troubled teens and at a facility for adults with disabilities. But my desire to teach children led me to tutoring at a private non-profit school for K-12. I worked there two years before starting to work at a facility for troubled youth. I worked there for one term before they closed down, and then started working with treatment foster care children through Mesilla Valley Hospital, a facility for children and adults with mental disorders. Teaching is a very rewarding experience. I especially like to see when my students progress to a higher level. I believe all children can learn but they often have different learning styles. As a teacher, I varied my teaching style to match a student's learning style. I like to do discovery labs and give the students a little information about the lab and they would create the lab. Students are very creative when given the opportunity and motivation to be creative. When I was placed in a Third Grade classroom in the Fall of 1979 for my student teaching experience, I knew then where I belonged. This was my final semester at the University and I was taking two classes to finish my requirements to graduate in December. Working with that age of child was exactly what I wanted to do. After graduation, I obtained a job working in Special Ed. as an aide. The experience was enough to get my foot in the door. The next Fall I began teaching in a Third Grade classroom. Until I retired in 2004, I continued to teach Third as well as Second Grade with two years at the Sixth Grade level.
